Luckily I did, but it wasn't because of Hi-def discs on the horizon...for whatever reason I wasn't interested in a DVD collection. I love my BDs though so I'm very happy it worked out that way. I don't even own most of my favorite movies on DVD...mostly comedies that I would put in from time to time just to remember a line or something.

I only racked up a couple hundred DVDs watching them on a 480P plasma and going through a couple cheap players, but it always made me wonder how good the HD stuff could be. Guess it was the cheap 1080P LCD I got for the PC that got me into it, along with HD cable. Now I was really curious. November last year came the 50PZ700U and DMP-BD10A, and in December the PS3. Gave a PS3 to a buddy so he could get hooked too. From zero to 140ish BDs in three months. Looking to replace SA-XR55.

It's only going to get worse now.

I don't plan to double dip except for a few absolute favorites. There are going to be plenty of new movies to purchase on Blu-ray without double dipping.

I have a little over 1,000 standard DVDs, and I understand what you're saying a "enjoying them all over again" I don't think I'll replace many of them with the Blu-Versions either... the upconversions are pretty good..... and besides..... "REGRET" ??? yeah right! I've been buying DVDs since 1996/1997 should I have been watching VHS ever since then????? I think not..... 11-12 years, I'd say I got my money's worth from my DVD collection.... Plus, they are STILL releasing stuff on DVD to this day, that wasn't available before (older titles, not talking about new releases) It's going to take a LONG time before Blu-Ray develops the type of library that Standard DVD has......

Netflix boasts 90,000 titles...... there's what.... maybe 1,000 Blu rays????

There's a lot of time before we see 90,000 Blu-Rays!

For this reason alone, I pretty much waited out on DVDs. I would rent them but wouldn't buy too many because I knew that this superior format was coming out and I could experience quality that rivals (or is better) than most movie theaters.

Now that Blu-Ray provides essentially the pinnacle of quality suitable for home use, I have no reservations with buying movies now, so I've been buying them up like mad. I probably owned less than 20 DVDs and now I own more than twice that on Blu-Ray.
Yes, me too. I stopped buying DVD's in 2003 after i heard about the new blue-laser media. I've now nearly as many BD as DVD's.

(Beta Man*)& it took those 11-12 years for all those movies on DVD to come out ,but it will be just a little quicker with Blu-ray, but still years... Thats just the way it works.

I bought my 1st dvd player the day of release. I own over 2000 movies, and i dont regret it. I stopped buying DVD's just before HD/BD came out, and switched over to those.

I realize that, and although I don't have the numbers to back it up, I'd venture to say since the beginning of "Film" to now, obviously the world's demand for movies has increased, but all of the films produced in the past 20 years might equal that of the films produced prior to 1988 ... so the number of DVDs available has more to do with films that were created before DVD was available.... it's all about things being released on the format.... and that takes a Long time.... I'm not sure why it would be any quicker for Blu than it was for DVD (I guess people are more accustomed to evolving technology, which is a good thing)

Like most, I will only double-dip on certain titles and will be content with most titles I own on DVD. I will admit that after watching content in HD, it's really hard to watch standard DVDs even upscaled. I'll pick up the Star Wars saga (again) and it will be a triple-dip for me (VHS, DVD and now Blu). I really don't consider this losing or wasting money. I've watched the movies enough to get my money's worth out of them. Besides, if we always wait around for the next big thing we may never enjoy what's available in the here and now. No one is promised tomorrow. No regrets.
