Default I waited out most of the DVD generation for Blu-ray... anyone else?

When DVD first started getting popular, HDTVs were already well on the market and you heard rumors of the media formats with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray on the horizon...

For this reason alone, I pretty much waited out on DVDs. I would rent them but wouldn't buy too many because I knew that this superior format was coming out and I could experience quality that rivals (or is better) than most movie theaters.

Now that Blu-Ray provides essentially the pinnacle of quality suitable for home use, I have no reservations with buying movies now, so I've been buying them up like mad. I probably owned less than 20 DVDs and now I own more than twice that on Blu-Ray.

I wish I waited for Blu-ray. I have over 500 DVD's, even at $10 each thats $5,000 down the drain. I got good use out of them and still watch them on my living room tv, so I guess it wasn't a total waste of money.

I already have 70+ Blu-rays within one year, so I didn't learn my lesson.

I actually got into DVD when I got my Playstation 2. I have over 115 dvd's currently but haven't bought any since I got my Playstation 3. Since I've watched Blu Ray's I hardly ever go to the movies now. I just rent titles from a local Blockbuster or I get the ones I really want. In my opinion it's better than going to the movies. I don't have to deal with high ticket prices, and if the movie wasn't great I'm not out that money. It's cheaper just to rent them instead. With all the great movies coming out on Blu this year(thanks in part to Warner switching) I see myself going broke, but oh well. Welcome to the forums!!

I have 1800 DVDs in house. I've been able to enjoy a movie nearly every night in my front projection theater for the past 8 years. I'm not the least bit sorry I went ahead and purchased them.

Now, with the outstanding job the BD30 does of upscaling them, they look close to the quality of Blu-ray and are enjoyable all over again.

I don't plan to double dip except for a few absolute favorites. There are going to be plenty of new movies to purchase on Blu-ray without double dipping.

I actually jumped into DVD quite early. My first drive was a creative DVD-ROM and mpeg card for my PC, had an output for my TV. At the time it was the cheapest solution.

I only went crazy on DVD's for a little bit though. Built up a collection to 250 and stopped buying last January. I've already double dipped on a few titles. But I hate doing that, just can't stand SD now.

I got into BD pretty early also. PS3 launch.

I only regret some of the latest purchases but I have over 500 DVDs and have been enjoying them since 2001. I am a big horror movie fan and alot of the films I am interested will probably never be seen on any High Definition format so DVD is still important in that respect.

But I did think about replacing as much as I could with Blu-ray which seems like a big waste of money since PS3 upscales really well.

The real regret I have is buying Evil Dead 2 on Blu-ray! Anchor Bay/Starz will have to release this again because the transfer is worst than the DVD!

I wish I had waited.

I'm sure the Star Wars Box Set and the Indiana Jones box set and the Lord of the Rings movies will cost about the same as they cost when I bought them on DVD. I should have rented them and waited.

Oh well,...

I didn't choose to wait, but through most of the rise of DVD I lived in an area where regular price (even for new releases) was $20. I generally didn't buy a DVD unless I REALLY wanted it, such as LOTR and Star Wars. Thanks in part to all the sales that have occured, I now have almost 100 BD's compared to my 60ish DVD's. All that in just 6 months.

Default Waiting for Blu Ray?

When I bought my First DVD player this was back in 1999. the widescreens were few and far between, but it was evident that this is going to be the new type of television. I didn't really give it much thought. so to protect my investment for a new tv in the future All of my DVD are in Widescreen format.

In Comparision to a lot of other people in this community. I love my movies and my collection. However I have only 138 DVD and now since blu ray has hit My Blu Collection is now at 20 (That is from December 2007)

I am not sorry that I bought my DVD's as I still get a ton of enjoyment out of them. For myself I think that there will be only a handful of movies I would re purchase again in the Blu Format.

1) LOTR Extended Cuts (My DVD Collection only has the theatre versions)
2) Blade Trilogy
3) X Men Trilogy
4) Possibly the Alien Set (Mine is the 20th Anniversary Edition)
5) Jurassic Park Collection

With I think a few single movies (about 5) that I will update and that is about it

This Time around I will get the James Bond Collection in blu when it is avail, Indiana Jones in blu when avail, and Star wars collection in blu when it comes out.

I brought my first DVD player back in 1998 and now own well over 1000 DVD's do I regret it NO! I will replace some of my DVD's with Blu but only ones that will benefit from the new audio / picture improvements. I have no doubt that in 5 or 6 years time I will be buying them all again in Supper High-Def 3D Smell O-Vision and I cant wait!

Going into Blu from DVD I am thinking it out a bit more, I had about 400 DVD's So yeah it really added up. Problem was, because of all the sales and deals and new releases coming out I was buying a lot of stuff that really wasnt worth keeping in the collection. So now I have the fun job of selling crap I don't want or don't need and upgrading most titles to Blu. I cant say I wish i would have held out out DVD but would have bought smarter and bought a lot less.

I'm some where around 250 DVDs/DVD collections. A large percentage of that is TV shows, most of which I won't purchase again (and a few I might, ie 24)

Some of the movies will be purchased again - mainly the action movies - but lots I'm content with just owning on DVD until either they are bargain bin Blus or we get another format.

I did sit out the last few years of movie purchases in anticipation of Blu though, so there is plenty of stuff for me to buy that I don't own.

I'm still waiting it out. I have a blu-ray player and HDTV system and a number of discs. However, I am still waiting for my favorite genres of films to come out in Blu-ray. This may be a long wait. I'm not sorry for any DVD's I've bought, and I knew early on too that DVD would be replaced by high definition DVDs. This stupid format war (corporate greed) has only delayed things and done a disservice to the consumer.

Gee... I wish I'd waited... I mean now I have near 900 DVDs to upgrade. I wish I'd waited a decade to enjoy films and just rented untill the "better" format came along. Damn, I wish I'd waited buying my PC. I mean every few months something better and faster comes out. I wish I'd waited buying my car, the next year model had a new option I couldn't get. If I'd waited buying my house I could have gotten this new construction technique. That's enough, I'm going to live in a cardboard box untill everything is finaliazed at it's comeplete best. I just hope they don't come up with better cardboard in 6 months...

I thought I was the only one like this!

I remember the time leading up to DVD quite well. Being a huge film fan I was dying to start my DVD collection until I started reading about the eventual successor, HD discs, that would soon follow. I think I still have the newspaper clippings from these articles somewhere and, actually, in the beginning they only talked about an HD version of DVD and there was no discussion about competing formats.

Given that DVD was estimated to be repalced in 6-8 years, I decided to pretty much forgo buying them and relied primarily on rentals and burning to my HTPC. As of today, I only have 10 physical DVD's in my colection while in the past three weeks alone I've bought over 20 Blu-Ray discs. I'm sure by the time Super/Ultra Blu-Ray rolls around I'll be over 400 and wishing I'd waited again!
