Next year the Switch will be 5 years old. At that point, we don't need a Switch Pro. We need a Switch 2.

I thought of that, too. I don't necessarily think that would come out next year, but I could certainly understand skipping the Switch Pro altogether if they plan to launch a completely new console in the next couple of years.

After they showed this Switch OLED Model, I'm pretty sure that we won't get a Pro and instead Nintendo goes directly towards a second one. Backwards compatibility is a given anyways, if Iwata's statements shortly before the release are anything to go by. Switch is not just a console, it's a concept.

I think Nintendo may be content with riding out the generation until 2023. If my analysis of hardware sales is numbers is correct, yearly sales of hardware in every region (JP,US,EU,Other) have increased every year since 2017. They're not going to jump to the next generation until that line graph shows signs of dipping.

Well that puts me in a bind. I don't have a Switch and was just going to wait for the Switch Pro or whatever at this point. Presumably that's this but I'll be pissed if I get this and then there's a real Switch Pro coming. I love the Oled screen on the vita so yeah I'll definitely get this. I don't care about prices.
Doesn't look like you can preorder anywhere yet, but best buy has a link to the product but you can't order yet. |

Sure, that's "lmfao" from a dollar and raw power standpoint, but you won't be playing a PS5 on a flight to Chicago or waiting in line at the DMV. Switch and PlayStation are practically in different categories. Last edited by heyadol; 07-09-2021 at 05:15 AM. |

I’d just recommend the Switch Lite at that point. Saves an extra $150 if you really just want on the go gaming. Anyone in the market for a base model/OLED model obviously also cares about docked functionality. And they’re gonna be thinking about spending that extra $50 for a PS5.

1. Switch has been out since 2017. In those 4 + years I have never seen anyone playing one on an airplane, in a restaurant, at a sporting event, or at the DMV. I think studies have even shown that the vast majority of Switch gamers play them in their home, even undocked (which is insane to me). I think the clever commercials that show young hot models playing Switch during a rooftop party or a guy in his mid 30's playing Pokémon in the hallway at his work are a LITTLE far-fetched. Japan you would probably see this more as long commutes to and from work on public transportation systems are far more common. 2. If that's YOUR life, then I guess I can see the value but just speaking for myself, I'm not a mobile gamer. Like...at ALL. So the appeal of on the go gaming is completely lost on me and paying a premium to have that feature is not appealing. Very rarely do I travel for my job and if I'm on vacation, I'm usually the one driving so I wouldn't be able to play anyway. Plus, maybe it's just me but as much as I love gaming, I go on vacation to UNPLUG for a while and get away from the norms of my day to day life and that includes gaming. I love videogames but I don't have to have it permeate my entire life all the time. |

The point I was making is if you buy this, or a different NS that meets your needs, but you would be upset when an upgrade inevitably gets announced, you should determine your threshold. If it’s less than two years, I predict you will “switch” from being happy with your purchase to bring pissed that something better appeared. And yes, I, too, would be frustrated if I bought this and then Nintendo released an actual pro model in March along w/ BotW 2. But if I were to buy this OLED model when it releases in the fall, and it’s another year before Nintendo releases an upgrade, I’m good. That’s my threshold. |

I’ve never done any of the stuff from the commercials though, I’ve never even played Switch multiplayer. Quote:
Anyway, I buy my nonsense because I enjoy using it, but I’ve long since accepted there are product cycles and upgrades. I don’t need the new iPhone or Galaxy every year, and I don’t need every console mid-cycle update or upgrade, but if something catches my eye I’m willing to upgrade. As you said, that’s my life, I was just trying to temper expectations. Bottom line, I hope FOMO doesn’t prevent someone from enjoying what they have. |

I guess for me it's all boiled down to this. Twice now Nintendo has done revisions for the Switch and twice it's been strictly for the benefit of the mobile gamer. The first revision was the Switch Lite, which of course made it more compact and less expensive. The second revision will be this model which brings an OLED screen, a better kickstand, and better audio. ALL of which is for the betterment of the mobile experience. As strictly a home console gamer, I feel a bit slighted. Where's OUR improvements? When is Nintendo going to throw us home console gamers a bone and do something to benefit us?
