Not sure what to think from that clip.

As a huge fan of the comics, I figured this would be a slam dunk. The comics just always felt more suited to animation than live action, yet even I was surprised how well Wright managed the impossible with the film. Not just cramming it all into one movie, but capturing the manic energy of most anime that I definitely got from the comics.

Which is why I'm surprised there just seems a serious lack of energy present in this clip. I would have expected the dialogue to be delivered faster. There aren't a lot cuts. The shots seem very static too. It's like the pace of everything feels kinda... slow. The comic and the film felt much faster paced to me.

Also the animation looks kinda odd. It feels unfinished and the weird blur effect to simulate focus is not working for me.

Still, it's not like this is totally dissuading me from watching the show. I want to give it a fair chance and kinda wished I just avoided that clip. Here's hoping the final product will be a better representation of the material than I found this to be.

What’s it a meta sequel reboot prequel to the movie or the books?

Starting episode 5. Loving it.

When Bryan Lee O'Malley said there was gonna be some differences I was expecting a few things. But man they are completely doing a whole new thing and it's great. I have the books and have seen the movie god knows how many times. So these changes are very welcome. Keeps it fresh.

It's interesting that...

[Show spoiler]The graphic novels, movie and now TV series are all virtually identical until they get up to the first "Boss Battle" with Matthew Patel, yet all three diverge wildly after that point.

Anyways, I didn't mind the changes, as I love all three now. The series is the perfect fusion of Bryan Lee O'Malley's art style with the engaging voice performances of the film cast. Hoping like hell this will get a physical release down the line...

Some behind the scenes tidbits from O'Malley:
DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HAVE WATCHED THE FULL SEASON. THIS HAS MASSIVE SPOILERS.

Finished last night and loved every second of it.

The changes they made were great because
[Show spoiler] we get to keep the great characters that are the formerly evil exes. Great character development for them all and I can't wait to see what happens with them next season

And if for some reason it doesn't get a second season, I'm very very happy with how it ended.

Five episodes in and I’m really struggling to get through this show. Mostly I’m just puzzled by the praise it’s gotten. Granted the big twist at the end of the first episode had me intrigued, but that quickly wore off when I realized I was facing a show that just isn’t that funny or entertaining to me.

For the record, I LOVE the original comic and movie. I found the comic in my early 20s in 2008 and related to it on many levels. I loved the series for its offbeat humor, video game references, and slice of life appeal. Mostly it was Scott that carried me through the story as I wanted him to improve and better himself by the end.

The show has none of that.
[Show spoiler]By removing his character, I am desperately finding anything to care about. What’s worse is so far this doesn’t seem an adaptation or a sequel, it’s more like a what if scenario, and like what if with marvel, I don’t care because there’s no stakes for me when it’s not the real story.
And the fact I’m not finding any of the humor funny or caring about the characters is a major issue.

But hey, others seem to like this and I guess good for them? It’s just puzzling to me, maybe I’ve just gotten too old…

I can't comment on the actual show as I've yet to watch it, but knowing what the show actually is now vs. how it was marketed, my interest for it has completely evaporated. Obviously I was really looking forward to this given how much I loved the movie, but the trailers marketed it as a retelling of the movie and comics and not a
[Show spoiler]What If? scenario like the Marvel series is. I personally like the Marvel series, but that was marketed as that from the get-go obviously, while this was not even remotely.

At this point, I'm not sure if I'm ever going to bother watching it given the bait and switch that Netflix did between the trailers and what the show actually is. It seems like it is still entertaining, but oh well.

Finally got around to starting this one, and only got through the first 2 episodes before I had to call it a night, but I'll echo the sentiments in saying how enjoyable it is so far. I was expecting something closer to the movie, but man, the end of the first episode got me good, and the second obviously did its own thing, which I loved. The movie is one of my all-time favs, and is already so much like a live-action anime/video game, but obviously there's just things they can't do in live action that are more easily done in animation. But I'm so happy that it didn't lose any of its charm or humor in the adaptation process- it's as fun and quotable as ever, while carving out its own identity. Really looking forward to continuing this tonight and seeing where else it goes.

According to a recent Instagram Q&A with original franchise creator Bryan Lee O'Malley, he mentioned that Netflix has a 2-year timed exclusivity contract for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, hopefully this means Universal or someone like GKIDS gives it a home video release in 2026
