This is excellent news. It looked wonderful in the theater, and if there was a recent film just crying out to be seen in 4K... it's this one.

Honestly think what pushed this release has more to do with the fact The Shape of Water was such a success theatrically and in home video sales, plus awards heavy. And it's the same distributor, so my take is that they wanted to keep it loyal for Del Toro. Thankfully from TSoW's success were getting this 4K.

A UK 4K release should be confirmed a month after it comes out in UK cinemas.

Excellent, gorgeously rendered film that approves on an already great adaptation in the 1947 version, but now with the novel's bleaker ending fully intact. And Cate Blanchett crushes it as Lilith Ritter - so fun to see her as a proper femme fatale. Day 1 purchase.

Lack of Amazon link makes sense since their feud with Disney is still happening.

Not really. Best Buy sometimes has listings six months in advance, sometimes only a few weeks (if that).

The movie wasn’t shot in B&W so I imagine it’s one of those faux conversions that doesn’t really work like Parasite, Fury Road, etc.

It’s worth noting that at the Q&A I attended, Del Toro stated that while the film was not planned for black and white, there was a several month pause in production due to the pandemic. It was at this point that GDT experimented with seeing what they already shot in black and white, and found that the photography which was shot with a traditional 3 point Hollywood lighting style, was well suited to monochrome. When production resumed, they actually shot the rest of the film with a BW version in mind.

And I would say the film works better in BW than color.

I can't believe this is still been going on for years... But it's Amazon's loss, at least for me I don't even both looking for Disney/Fox discs on there anymore, I just stick to Target or the DMC now...

Due to COVID and not being able to see this in theaters this will be a blind buy for me, but one I will be happy to buy that way! And with talk of Death on the Nile, that will be another blind buy for me if it comes out in 4k.

Oh, I've just came back from the screening (it started today in russia). Can't wait to buy it on 4k. This one really needs HDR and 4K, it's such a beautiful cinematography with lots of high contrast afternoon light scenes. Can't wait.

I really hope both versions are included, even if the B&W version is BD only. (But I want it in 4K as well.)

Missed this in theaters, but I love del Toro so I'll likely get this (probably from the DMC).

It just goes to show that both WILD THINGS and THE HANDMAIDEN understood this material better by introducing a final act lesbian double cross. They’re the more interesting characters here and re teaming Blanchett and Mara would have been amazing. Del Toro so strictly following the original material just feels regressive.
