Arguably the weirdest announcement I have come across in ages but I am more than happy for Disney to lease their vault (BVHE and Fox) to other authoring studios and facilities. Maybe we will see IMAX Enhanced as well lol.

This has been a rumor for quite some time btw, our insider on Criterion Forum said Criterion was going to announce an animated title no one was expecting.

That could very well be true.

The most obvious question is what will make this disc an improvement over Disney's own release? Is it a brand new master? I would think it wouldn't get any better than what Disney already released.

My thoughts as well. I'm not shelling out for this if the transfer is nearly identical.

Would love for Criterion to do the Pirates films justice on 4K, especially Curse of the Black Pearl.

so why does Criterion get to release discs on 100-g and Dolby Vision, but Disney can't?

Easy. Disney is too concerned with D+ and they don't want to spend the money on discs, but they're happy to let someone else pay them to do so.

What I find interesting, reading the announcement again on IG, is that they specifically mention "Pixar," and nearly go out of their way to avoid saying "Disney," if that tells us anything.

1. What the hell.
2. Awesome news that Criterion will maybe license from Disney. That would be HUGE.
3. I'm not upgrading from 4K UHD to a Criterion 4K UHD. That's stupid. The current 4K UHD release is already great. With Sony's new Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 4K UHD release, we're now at the point where "old" 4K UHDs are being upgraded and re-sold. It has to stop somewhere. I can't support this release.

This is actually really cool. Hopeful that it will bode well for The Straight Story in the Collection! And Ed Wood would be a dream.

Criterion has a mic drop moment!!

It's Disney+ Day, so it makes sense they would announce it today. My first reaction was like others on here. "Is this a joke? It's gotta be a joke!" But it's obviously true and now I see that a ton of cool special features will be part of the release, so I may wind up buying it. What I really hope is that Criterion will have access to Disney's catalog of titles, Fox, and more. Fingers crossed!

I hope for a Criterion release of Song of the South.
Also, this isn’t Disney but I always wished for Criterion releases of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit ever since I saw fanart showing them as if they were Criterion releases.

I love the smell of megatons in the morning early afternoon. Let the speculation over Disney/Fox licensing commence!

Pretty sure he said that was an 80's Japanese film, unless he mentioned two animated films. Nearly all of the stuff he said turned out to be BS
