Just watched this for the first time. I really liked it, and thought the last 20 minutes were pure Kung Fu bliss. This movie is 100% John Woo and so many themes present in films like The Killer are present here. This almost felt like a Kung Fu version of the The Killer to be honest. Huge body count, brotherhood, betrayal, the works. Wish I had watched this years ago, but better late than never. Also really loved the main song which plays at the start and fits perfectly in the end at a very John Woo moment. Overall, one of the better Kung Fu films I've seen.

This is very much the best this movie has ever looked. I'm glad I pre-ordered this even if the art doesn't look much like the leads in this movie. Not too happy that the English Dub options are 192kbps instead of something higher, but thank goodness the remix audio isn't the only option for original language. I forgot just how many jokes are throughout this as well. Having only the original 4:3 letterbox dvd from Hong Kong all these years because it has the original English dub, this certainly is a very good improvement.

Yep, love this one. Great to see Fung Hak-on in more of a lead role.

The more I watch, the more I'm convinced that he was in at least 95% of all HK kung fu movies made in the 1970s.

I think the last two minutes of this film are utter perfection. The emotions really hit with the music of the tragedy we just witnessed, but how epic and bad ass the moment was. Easily one of the best endings I've seen in film.

It does look the best it ever has on home video, but it's a bit disappointing that the extras are so bare.

Still, we are getting a bit spoiled when it comes to classic martial arts films on home video nowadays...

I'm surprised DVDBeaver never reviewed Eureka's release. Some more extras, like a commentary track, would have been nice. If the PQ between the two releases isn't that big (pretty sure it's the same resto for both), I may just opt for Eureka's release, since it also includes Hand of Death. I've never seen either of them.

The UK release has a longer 15 min interview with John Woo as well as an audio commentary.

Criterion Channel has the film and the Grady Hendrix interview, for those for not wanting to buy the disc due to slight extras. You can save a bundle by sampling films on the channel that you aren't likely to buy on disc. The channel doesn't have all the films on disc but has a lot of them.

It's actually a different Grady Hendrix interview on the site vs. the disc. Surprising they didn't include it on the disc as well considering how sparse the features are.

I blind bought this during the recent flash sale, glad I did. Enjoyed it a great deal, definitely see myself rewatching it again in the future. Great looking scan, fun movie.

If it's the same master as Eureka than this is Criterion caring even less about extras than they did on Arsenic and Old Lace.

Finally got around to watching this last night... first quarter of the movie is pretty awful, like it's making fun of itself... which it is, but I wasn't so sure at that point. It's like suddenly after that a switch flicks and everything just gets so much better. After that I loved it!

YMMV but this has a 30% coupon on my account that brings it down to $14.55 before taxes. These offers are targeted, so many will not see it.
