A definite improvement over the fifth one. The Core Four are given more room to breathe, the set-pieces are bigger and more suspenseful, and the NY setting injects some freshness into the franchise. It's not without its faults (the characters feel more invincible than ever, and Gale's characterisation felt like a reset), but I had a really good time.

This might be the least meta of all the films but I did appreciate some of the more deep-cut references, like a nod to Wes Craven's pseudonym as a porn director.

First off, I need to see this movie again. Because right now, I'm slightly disappointed it. The opening was kind of the most exciting part of the film. I like how the main Ghostface killer took out the youngling Ghostfacers. That was the most suspense the movie pulled together.

Just a little gripe which is completely trivial. This film was set on Halloween. Other than costumes, it could've been Easter. There were no decorations, Halloween music, no ambience at all for the greatest of holidays.

And Chad. This is the spoiler thread, right?? How the hell did he survive 18 stabs to the chest. His lungs should look like pulled pork! Enough is enough, Radio Silence.

At least Stu rests in his grave for another film... My Scream love still stands at 123456. I do believe I will come to enjoy this movie for a long time, but I think I was expecting something that they just couldn't pull off - the perfect film. Only 1 film in this franchise is perfect.

They could've done so much more with the elements introduced, from the idea of the killers not caring about movies, to the multiple groups of Ghostfaces, the New York setting, and much more.

Kirby and Mindy were absolutely correct to say that the best Elm Street is the original. Dream Warriors loyalists cannot be trusted.

Everyone knows that Wes Craven's original and New Nightmare are the best movies in the franchise, followed by Dream Warriors and Dream Master.

* Dream Warriors and The Dream Master are pretty much on par for me (even though Tuesday Knight is no Patricia Arquette)

I have to add: they were dead wrong about Candyman, though. While I enjoyed the reboot for the most part, it doesn't hold a candle to the original.

Nightmare 2 is closely tied to the original for me, because I watched them together on tv a lot. They were new then, so that's what I would rent every chance I could. I'm glad I had apathetic parents...

My biggest complaint is how Mindy kept getting attacked/stabbed and almost seemingly dies 2-3 times but the next day she's perky and acting just fine??

As much as it pains me to say it - I actually ended up okay with her not being there. I'm sure things were reworked considerably, but even so - I was okay with her taking a break here.

Agreed - funny enough, when the killer reveal happened, I had the same feeling I did when I saw Scream 2 for the first time - "oh..." It didn't ruin the picture, but it just didn't bowl me over, either. That said, I thought the dispatch of the killers was much better and more satisfying than in the last film. I truly loved seeing them get what they deserved.

Oh, I'll take the contrary position on that one, LOL.

It's not just the references (as there were clearly references to all the killers in this one), they do seem to be very carefully laying the seeds to bring Stu back.

They went out of their way in the last film to talk about Stu, and how he was the "forgotten one", how Billy got all the credit, etc. You can imagine Stu, well, stewing about this for decades. That he looks like the perpetual loser hanger on, when he felt he was much more integral to the origin of this whole thing.

In this film, while they talked about all the killers, I thought it was very interesting when in the "museum" they showed the TV. Of course, this was to set up Kirby using it later, but...someone can correct me if I am wrong, as I've only seen it once, but I was struck by the fact that the TV actually had very little damage. Basically, you could see where his head cracked it at the bottom, but most of the TV screen was intact, and - unlike a lot of the other props which were dripping with blood everywhere - I don't believe there was any on it.

Then you have the continuation of the whole Ghost Billy conceit. In the last film it could have been just a cheesy way to bring back a legacy character (and I think a lot of people saw it that way), but it's continuation in this film with little purpose really leads me back to what I thought to begin with - that the entire point of bringing Billy "back" was to set up a final confrontation between "him" and Stu.

Billy and Stu are really the only major "unfinished business" in the franchise. I can totally see that big showdown as the conclusion to this trilogy. Matthew Lillard ranting "Billy, Billy, Billy!! Why is it always Billy??!!" And then him and the daughter going at it until (hopefully) Sidney comes in and finishes it, once and for all.

TBH, I don't think there are many other places it can go while still including the legacy characters, and setting this all up as a finale to finally send them off into the sunset. Other than that, it's just going into Stab territory, LOL.

Of course, could be totally wrong - but it definitely seems like it is leading there, to me, and personally I think I would find it pretty satisfying if executed well.

I'll admit that could be interesting, if it was done perfectly. I don't think Radio Silence can do it perfectly, however. I agree that using legacy characters is close to hitting a wall. There's not much left you could actually do with them (killers as well). I hope Stu stays in his casket, but I'd still watch if the character returns. Out of curiosity.

I almost fake-vomited when I saw the reveal for Ritchie's family. It just did not make me go "ooooooohhh" like it did with Stu's reveal, and even with Mickey and Momma Loomis.

But c'mon, there's got to be more creativity out there, guys! There has to be places the Scream franchise can go with new characters each film. It's breaking my suspension of belief that people can go through what these characters have been going through. It's time to introduce new characters and stories to the Screamiverse.

His shirtless scene was one of the best moments of the movie, forgot to mention.

I rank Dream Warriors fifth out of the OG seven, lol. Personally New Nightmare is my favourite.

Neither of them saying Jason Lives as the best Friday was what stung the most.

At the end, she did have the throwaway line that she was heavily medicated as they're loading Chad into the ambulance.

Let me tell you I damn nearly cried at Chad getting stabbed up and I hardly ever get sad during movies.

I thought he was a goner until they cut to the morning outside and I quickly remembered the leaked set photo of Chad being taken by an ambulance.

They really made us care about these characters and made the deaths more emotional instead of just throwing a party after someone dies.

That's really the rub, though - in franchises of all types. It's like, if someone wants to make a new, original, creative movie - they aren't often the best place for it. And even at it's best - you basically are at that point just using the title to sell a film.

On one hand, people often say they want a new, fresh direction - but then often don't like it when they do. That's why I'm happy if they do one more, tying up things for the legacy characters, and then they can go and do what they will with the name.

I knew the killers and their motives for 4 months now because I know someone who went to the test screening, so when Quinn randomly mentioned her brother dying in my head I thought how obvious it was that she’d be a killer, but since I already knew, was it obvious for anyone who didn’t know? It was so odd.

Did anyone 100% understand Jason’s involvement? When I heard test screening spoilers it made no sense and I still don’t understand it?

How were they aware what Jason was up to and able to stop him that very night?

Bailey’s explanation in the killer monologue was too quick so I quite didn’t understand.

——-

The opening is getting praised for being different but it was so boring? Laura sat in a restaurant talking on the phone, took 20 steps outside and got stabbed up… no iconic Samara Weaving scream, no chase, no attempt to fight back.

And then Jason walks back to his poorly lit apartment, stands around talking on the phone, and immediately gets killed. No chase or screaming and fighting.

I just think they could’ve did the “killer revealed early” and “killer killed early” in a much better way.

—-

Getting kind of tired of Ghostface popping up out of nowhere and quickly killing people. Vince, Judy, and Wes were enough.

Yeah, I agree - there was LOT here. I think some of it just wasn't as heavy-handed and obvious as before. There is a great deal of Scream 2 in particular this movie, from the obvious (the references you pointed out, to the music, etc.) to the less obvious (shots, character beats, and so on).

It's actually why (unlike the last film) I walked out wanting to see this one again ASAP. There was so much to unpack in each scene, and I know there was no way I registered all of it the first time. Everything was pretty much on the nose with the last film, where this one was much more nuanced and felt structured on a more sophisticated level as an analog to Scream 2.
