It's probably a trial balloon/test project for what Sony intends to do with their eventual Ps6 down the road. At least it's an entirely option thing and not going to sink their entire console, as was the case with Nintendo's Wii U.

Probably the best answer. Sony (and Xbox) will transition more of their offerings to cloud products, reasonable to think Sony would want to train users that the best way to experience PlayStation games will continue to be on PlayStation hardware even when the games are remotely delivered.

I still believe this is more for the Asian market where internet infrastructure is way better and mobile gaming is more valued. I bet this thing won't even be heavily marketed here in the states. It'll be available, but it probably will be treated as just another accessory on the shelf.

I’m expecting another PlayStation Direct exclusive in the US. Won’t make it to stores unless Sony decides it’s going to be profitable to expand distribution.

I wonder if Sony is planning on utilizing this as a "second screen" controller. That could be a really cool feature for things like inventory management, map display, play selection in Madden, etc. I remember back before the PS5 launched, one of the rumors was the PS5 controller was going to feature an LCD screen. I wonder if this is what they were referring to. Maybe they saw an early prototype of the Q-lite and thought it was the PS5 controller.

It does look pretty low effort, wonder if the price will also be lower than expected.

199.99

Sony is officially launching its portable PlayStation later this year, the PlayStation Portal remote player. The handheld device will stream PS5 games over Wi-Fi and features an eight-inch LCD screen running at 1080p resolution at 60fps. Sony says the PlayStation Portal will be available later this year priced at $199.99.

“PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi, so you’ll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal,” says Hideaki Nishino, senior vice president of platform experience at Sony Interactive Entertainment. “PlayStation Portal can play supported games that are installed on your PS5 console and use the Dualsense controller.”

The PlayStation Portal features prominent controllers on each side that look very much like Sony’s PS5 DualSense controllers. They support adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, so PS5 games will feel similar to using a dedicated DualSense controller. The PlayStation Portal will also be capable of playing media, as the homescreen has a dedicated section for it much like the PS5

As long as gamers can take it on vacation far away from their PS5 console, this could be good competition for the Switch. But I hear it needs the PS5 within range of all ideas that could backfire on Sony. I guess if a person wants to be outside enjoying the sunny weather on a chair while playing near their house, it makes more sense. Or if they have a big house and are watching TV but playing games on the portable on another level of the house.

It resembles a phone pad with the controller cut in half, almost like a custom device. $199.99, that's not too bad though for those interested. I was expecting $299.99 from Sony.

What do you mean by this? It's my understanding that as long as you have a Wi-Fi connection, you can access your PS5 via remote play from anywhere. What do you mean within range?

Also if I were Sony, I would also market this as a controller with a second screen. I would actually be all about that if it was utilized for things ike maps, inventory management, play calling in Madden, etc.

To any current PS remote play users: are there currently restrictions on which games work via remote play?

I would still like to know what other functions are available, I was expecting PSN/PS+ since there is a fully functional Android app. At least the price isn't terrible, or I should say it is in the range of other dedicated streaming handhelds.

**edit: PS Blog offers clarification on this.

PS VR2 games, which require the headset, and games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming, are not supported.

Makes sense to say that. Not sure who would expect a PSVR2 game to work, but they’ve got to cover their bases.

I dunno what you mean.

Are ya saying you can use any Wifi hotspot & access your PS5? Definitely not how remote play worked in the past. The old method was a shared wifi connection from the PS3/PS4’s wifi range from the console.

If you can in fact use any wifi method I hope it has a good encryption from console to this device when paired.

And only supported games. I don't curate my collection of PS4 and PS5 games to not be able to play them with a $200 device that turns my phone into a controller.

nah. I used to log in from outside to play remotely on my phone (different network of course)

an option to use your internal network (no internet required, as long as both devices are connected to the same network) would be a better option of course. but I don't think current remote play can do that? you have to use the internet wifi inside or outside the house/network, which can be laggy

probably 99% of the ps4 library support remote play, though (minutes the VR games, and some odd games excluded for whatever reason) they have to say things like that for legal reasons
