Wow..! The conversion reminds me of the kind of style that The Rock movies got in the mid-2010s. They understood the assignment completely - we dont go to 3D movies for barely visible 3D. The goal was clearly not to be perfectly realistic and there are plenty of errors, but it is an absolute blast and strong the whole way through. It's in stereo from the moment the custom Universal logo appears right until the first section of the credits end. There are some very creative shots and I will absolutely be seeing it again in 3D.
I missed the full stereo conversion credit but apparently it was the work of Indian and Canadian teams. ![]() |

Loved this in 3D! Very good depth and volume for the whole runtime. The 3D especially works to showcase the amazing set design and put you in the location. Standouts for me were the school library scene and the act 1 finale location. But, pretty much every set has standout 3D moments.
The movie itself does a great job of propelling you along and keeping you engrossed in the story. The runtime has gotten a lot of talk, but in my estimation it earned it. Highly recommended. |

2 hours, 40 minutes, that's like a Lord of the Rings movies almost in runtime. Thanks.

Is this film not doing particularly well?
I'm out of the loop on it, I'm asking because I see many of my local theaters have as of yesterday dropped its 3D showings in favor of Moana 2 in 3D. |

The 2D shows for Wicked are definitely doing well, they may be dropping 3D because of lack of availability in auditoriums that can do 3D, Moana is taking a lot of auditoriums per theater starting tomorrow. We were able to keep just 1 show (the very last one) in 3D on Friday and Saturday.

My girl and I saw this last Saturday evening, and quite enjoyed both the film and its 3-D presentation. A really solid conversion overall, love the flying scenes and the library dance number especially. As for the film itself, I went in completely cold, knowing only that the story was from the Wicked Witch of the West’s point of view and that she was the protagonist. Excellent cast and performances, spectacular production design, and an involving story with heart and tragedy that kept me guessing. I always appreciate an always timely anti-fascism message. The only part that was a bit of a letdown for me was the music, as I’m not a big fan of the modern Broadway style of doing things; I’m more of an old-school musical buff, which is why a throwback like Mary Poppins Returns made me so happy. But it’s what I expected, and that’s ok. The performances and the story make the movie. And the 3-D is quite nice. If Turbine releases it, I’m in. Wouldn’t want to watch it in 2-D now.

saw this in RealD 3D last night and a couple of cool moments but overall very, and I emphasize very, mild throughout. a shame because the land of Oz lends itself to a great environment to use 3D.

Eh, I thought it was much better than that. I’ve seen very mild 3-D and Wicked One ain’t it.

I watched it in IMAX 3D (xenon), it was very dark (as seen in the trailers) but it had good 3D moments at the beginning and in the last part, with a few in between but it clearly wasn't shot with 3D in mind, many things get cut out of the screen ruining the 3D effect. There's a scene with floating flowers that looks amazing but many of them are cut at the sides. I think the most impressive 3D shot was one of a balloon inside a tall narrow tower with sparks flying all around.
In terms of 3D I'd say The Wizard of Oz >> Oz the Great and Powerful >> Wicked. I'm not a fan of musicals but I don't get why many people hate them, I enjoyed them and I enjoyed this one. The story and themes were great too. I'm not really a fan of prequels explaining things that didn't need explanation like why the yellow brick is yellow but other things did made sense. Even if the most boring song had the best visuals and funnest choreography while the most iconic song had the dullest choreography for half the song lmao There was only one IMAX 3D showing (at 1:40 pm) and two IMAX 2D showings but still it was at least half full, even at that time. Maybe the fact that the IMAX 2D showings were in Spanish made more people prefer the 3D showing lol. I hope those people enjoyed the 3D version and are wanting to watch more 3D. Being Universal I really hope Turbine can give us the 3D Bluray because even if it's not the best 3D presentation, I think it's worth it. |

Cinépolis is supposed to have laser projection now but their RealD 3D showings still look very dark and washed out (and the trend of making movies dull and washed out doesn't help). If it was dark in IMAX I can't imagine it looking any good in RealD.

The movie was good but has a bit, too much singing. I don't like back to back songs either. The songs were not bad at all though. The 3D seemed to be good in that soup of darkness. Day time shots were very dull |

Saw this over the weekend and adored it, the movie and the 3D. The theater was full of kids oohing and aahing at the 3D and the song numbers, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house during the more tender scenes. This is the kind of film that proves 3D movies can be emotional movies.
The 3D is never less than good. Oz looks very expansive, and the film features several roller coaster tracking shots to make you feel like you're flying. The dance choreography also works well in 3D, at times it even seems choreographed with 3D in mind, with all the dancers in discrete planes, or maybe it's just channeling how the show was designed to be seen on stage. It reminded me of watching Wim Wenders' Pina. With a nearly 3 hour runtime, I wish there a few more wow moments in the 2nd half. But the film's finale is an undeniable triumph. “Defying Gravity” is everything you'd hope for in stereo. When Elphaba falls out of the building. Glass shards popped off the screen, and then depth stretches for miles as she falls to the ground below. This sequence alone would be demo-worthy on a 3D Blu-ray. Jon M Chu didn't let us down.
