I used to watch movies on HBO in HD in 2005 or 2006 whatever year they started doing 720P and 1080i, and they were always correct aspect ratio if they had bars. I wonder if Twohy ever screened that 1.78 aspect ratio and that's why.

The Xbox game was great, who didn't play that, so they are collecting the cinematics to watch, that's cool cause Vin did all his voice work

I wish the third disc wasn't included. Where the heck am I going to get a 5 disc case for a DIY combo pack?

I don't like the idea of an open-matte transfer (or open-matte live action and cropped VFX shots, regardless) but at least it's contaminating it's own disc

I have never seen the DC. I saw the film theatrically way back in 2004 (damn I feel old). I remember the world being really cool and expansive, but not as much of a story or character development as the first. The first film was not exactly a character study, but it had a tight focus, put the characters in genuine danger while making you know enough about them to actually care if they make it or not. Regardless, I look forward to seeing it again as I haven't seen it since the initial DVD or maybe even during the original run.

That'd be just an extra, though, right?
Shot Super 35 so for non-VFX shots at least there's a much taller negative to play with (tho VFX was rarely rendered out at the widest 2.39 aspect, they'd usually do it a bit taller just to have some leeway for repositioning if nothing else). Still doesn't give it any artistic merit mind you, but it'd be interesting to know if Twohy requested or approved it.

WWZ was a case of where Shout was sent whatever Paramount sent them and apparently the unrated cut of the movie wasn't able to be included in that resolution. Kinda reminds me of whenever people were complaining Kino's release of Tropic Thunder only had the theatrical cut in 4K.

Also what's the dialogue you mention in the director's cut for Pitch Black that clashes with the Johns character?

Most of it is nuance and synergy with the third movie so I won't bother overexplaining my preference on that. But in the first film itself during the
[Show spoiler]extended Johns confession that he only spikes drugs because he needs it for the pain due to Riddick shanking his spine this clashes with what became the theatrical cut because Carolyn decides to ridicule him later for being a spike head in front of everyone, which makes no sense after Johns confided in her he wasn't just a pleasure junky. I'm assuming this is probably the reason Twohy cut the scene in the first place, but just putting it back without removing Carolyn's comment later on it clashes for me.

tl;dr it's better if Johns is just a junky scumbag he doesn't need to be humanized at all, especially when Riddick tells his dad he's a junky scumbag in the third movie.

I think in general the pacing is a bit better in the theatrical cut too, there is one edit I found a bit abrupt but the added dialogue for the director's cut in the same scene didn't add too much to me

Is it when Carolyn is running to the hole and Johns stops her to talk in the extended? Yep it's bad, the cut tempo is way better in the shorter version. The only part I really like in the extended is Riddick talking about the Sol Track Shipping Lane when he's giving away he probably knows how to pilot a ship.

I've always wanted to like this movie more than I actually do.

There's fun stuff in individual sequences, but it's such a cobbled together bit of nonsense as a whole.

Very happy this is finally coming. Also pretty sure Shout is doing the final one. They better include the extended cut.

It was actually whenever Imam says "to keep the devil at bay" before cutting to the next scene fairly early into the movie

I always found that edit to be a bit abrupt in the theatrical cut but the extra dialogue the director's cut added didn't do much for me

I remember Super35 Independence Day - the VFX shots were full 2.35 and horribly cropped in 1.33 and 1.78

ILM did 2:1 for Super35 and 1.66 for 1.85

I guess it depends on who's doing the VFX.

Let's just hope this isn't one of those Clash/Wrath of the Titans situation where they take the Atmos away after initially announcing it.

I haven't seen that. But it's nearing Edge of Tomorrow tier LFE

Great announcement but hopefully it has Atmos, because their Pitch Black edition did not. The Turbine edition that was released shortly after Arrow's had it, so will wait and see what happens here.

I still would like to hear Turbine's Atmos mix for the first film, I always thought the track needed an LFE boost in a remix, it was a tame track compared to Chronicles and Riddick. I was actually going to buy the Turbine at the time but the price was $20 vs. $60 to import so I made the value play, but Arrow have theatrical cut which is a must Turbine don't. I guess for Atmos diehards they don't need to wait for Turbine this time.
