Is it me, or is the trailer a blend of flat 2D shots and 3D space? Some of the 3D looks great, while some of the depth could've easily been pushed further.

Also a subjective choice in addition to some 3D shots looking mild (like when we see some of the raptor birds flying in the foreground but the 3D strength is still mild), would be Cameron's choice of when to make it 24 frames per second during dialog scenes and 48 frames per second during action.
It's not always smoothly done, and can be jarring when during a 48 fps action scene, they suddenly switch to 24 fps while yelling, then back to 48 for the next brief action shot, then back to 24 fps for talking again. To me, that was like the projectionist kept playing with the frame rate as the movie was going. Not ideal. Cameron insists 24 is cinematic for dialog and 48 for action being smoother/less choppy. I'd prefer one or the other in theaters. So all 48 fps, or all 24 fps, but not both. I know some love the mixture. |

Correct, it's subjective. Not as noticeable with the mild/flat shots in the movie, but still frustrating. The wide shots of the nomads in the trailer should've be full of depth and pop (almost as if a conversion would've gotten the job done better).

Hoping for a 3D Blu Ray especially to avoid HFR but it could do with being 30 mins shorter runtime.

I got to watch the exclusive teaser for Avatar: Fire and Ash in 3D IMAX 1.90:1, and similar to the previous Avatar films, there are some strong 3D moments like arrows pointing towards the camera, and it's on the same level as the previous Avatar films. I really wish James Cameron could lean more into hyperstereo and deliver some more effective 3D moments but it is what it is. Some shots also looked 2D just like TWOW. It was in 1.90:1 and there was no HFR footage. Looking forward to watching it in December, and I'm looking to catch this in Dolby Cinema 3D if possible.

Caught the trailer in 3D ahead of The Fantastic 4 at the weekend.
The visuals are as striking and effervescent as before and there are moments that beautifully showcase everything that originally made Avatar such an essential cinematic experience in 3D . It didn't quite knock my socks off the way the 3D trailers for The Way of Water did, but in a time of 3d-optional conversions, the vibrant living world of Pandora is always a sight for sore eyes. There are a number of distant establishing shots with very little in frame to demonstrate depth perception, so it wasn't wall-to-wall showstoppers (which is consistant with how Cameron uses 3D and is to be expected). Actually one nice thing about this approach was the very opening shot where you're looking at the floating mountains and you think maybe they're playing the 2d trailer ...until characters swoop dramatically into frame in pronounced 3D space. Very deliberate use of 3D. It was a Real D (4DX) screening, and they hadn't dimmed the lights, so it probably didn't have the full impact, but was very promising nonetheless. It's great to have the full trailer finally online. Hopefully the actual 3D trailer will be uploaded as we saw with the previous movie. |

I asked google AI if Avatar fire and ash would be released on 3D blu-ray in the future...
"Yes, Disney plans to release "Avatar: Fire and Ash" in 3D, along with other formats, but the exact release date for a 3D Blu-ray is not yet announced. The film will be available in IMAX 3D, Dolby Cinema 3D, and RealD 3D in theaters. Disney is also tailoring the release to different screen specs, collecting detailed screen data from cinemas". Well, of course we need to take that with a grain of salt as the old saying goes. But perhaps that might add a hair of hope. |

I thought the trailer looked great in 3D, on par with Way of Water and the first film. Especially that early shot with the seed floating in the air. Yes Cameron has some 2D shots, which as a poster mentioned above I think is to avoid the miniature effect. I think he could push it a little more but it’s clearly a deliberate choice.
Technically the “imax” version is 1.85, not 1.90. Tiny difference but that’s the actual aspect ratio. On a 1.90 IMAX screen there are tiny bars on the sides that are not noticeable. The first Avatar was 1.78 aka 16x9. Again a tiny difference. I do agree that I like the idea of mixing HFR footage with 24fps for dialogue, but in practice it was sometimes jarring. I kinda wish he had done a 30/60fps mix instead, which I believe could be replicated at home. This is one film where a slightly ‘smoother’ look I think would be fine for the world. And I’d probably prefer some big action set pieces are just 60fps throughout and the rest is 30fps throughout so it’s not as jarring or noticeable when it switches. But it is what it is. Still a completely unique cinematic experience. |

I am looking forward to supporting this in 3D theaters, but I'm really hoping we get a blu ray 3D release as we did the prior 2 3D films. I think it's great the publisher/rights owner decided to support blu ray 3D years after 3DTVs stopped being produced, but probably realizing there is still a good amount of 3D fans and collectors of blu ray 3D still buying 3D movies on blu ray 3D.
Avatar 3 Fire & Ash Blu Ray 3D in 2026, maybe by May or June, is my guess and hope. That would be awesome. |
