When it comes to 3D, I think Kenny Powers put it best -
“Don't get all excited, dude. 3D is gay. Nobody wants to sit on a couch wearing glasses, poppin' bubbles out of the air like some sort of f'd up Ray Charles..."

As far as 8K, you can kind of see it happening, if only for the studios to have another excuse to sell us all yet another version of Star Wars, Indy, The Godfather, The Matrix, etc, etc.

I caution everyone against taking this poster at his word. He has a tendency to make things up.

See here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=1381

And here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=132

And here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=134

He says things such as, "I saw it in this video" but then can't provide evidence of what he's talking about. As you can see in this thread, it's part of an ongoing pattern.

Why are there zero second-hand sources to back up this major announcement that would've been watched by AT LEAST thousands of people?

I am doubtful that this background chatter you are describing related to films, probably rather to video games. I can definitely see 8K screens and TVs in the future, but primarily for video gaming and improved resolution and display quality in general.
But I somehow doubt there will be a meaningful home cinema market when it comes to 8K content. Even today, many films are mastered in 2K and then upscaled to 4K because of extensive digital effects which are usually rendered at 2K resolution. Also, the improved picture quality between 2K and 4K is far less noticeable for modern, digital films, which already have a clean look that lends itself to 2K formats, than classic 35 or 70 mm pictures. And the mass market (even in the home cinema community) is only interested in contemporary cinema (save for a few classic blockbusters that for some reason even the haters of classic cinema enjoy, like Jaws, Star Wars or Indy). 8K would probably be the ideal format for classic 70 mm films like Ben-Hur or Lawrence of Arabia. And I would likely get an 8K television set or projector just to see those in 8K. But that is not enough to justify 8K technology for the mass market right now.

Most 8K TVs will be prohibited in the EU market because of power consumption.

EDIT: Apparently manufacturers can get around these regulations with eco-mode/lowest power consuming settings.

Our TVs comply with regulations with the Eco friendly "Off" mode.

I personally feel no need to jump to 8K. However, does physical media need to keep up with the latest/up coming mainstream TV definition standard to stay in the game?

I feel that technology in general, which we experience or have to deal with in our daily lives, is constantly changing far too quickly.

Now that would be ironic, people watching Big Brother on their high power consuming 8K wall screens and the power grid goes down.

10 minutes into this interview with Charlotte Barker, who works in film restoration, she says that while restoring The Godfather they did scans in 4k and 8k and that she thought the 4k scan actually looked better than the 8k one. I've heard people say this about 8k tvs when compared to 4k ones as well, especially when it comes to the brightness of them cuz supposedly the pixels are so small not as much light gets through.

I wont believe it until Sony officially confirms it.

This thread should be moved anyway.

Not sure of the validity of 8k but I plan to upgrade my projector screen from 110" to 135". I can't help but wonder how 8k would look on a larger screen. If it should ever see the light of day I think that's where 8k could be practical and find a small niche.

I have no idea what you think I said. Maybe re-read my original post and we can go on from there.

I don't think I have said anything out of line in this thread, and I have tried to remain respectful. Since you are refusing to extend the same courtesy to me, I will be reporting this thread immediately.

4K, and I'd even argue 1080p, is enough for me. Mastering makes far more of a difference than a little video compression.

Except that's exactly what I want.... in 4k (or as close as the format allows given the obvious restrictions with resolution)

Post produced movies that were never intended for 3D are certainly annoying, however Films like Friday the 13th III, Avatar, Jaws 3D, My Bloody Valentine 3D, Piranha 3D, and countless others that were made specifically with 3D in mind are vastly superior experiences in 3d compared to their 2D counterparts.

To be clear.. I don't want artful window box "deep" 3D. I want gimmicky, in your face, pop out of the screen 3D. Yes, that includes those bubbles. Not for all films... not for most films... but rather I want it available for that small segment of films that chose to utilize it and actually put effort into the effects as an artistic choice (like Friday the 13th part 3) as opposed that just post converted it for the sake of adding another Sku to retail shelves to sell folks and in turn charge more money.

In any case, adding 3D to the 4k releases would be a vastly better use of resources than going down the path of 8k. Studios already complain about the costs associated with 4k restorations, there is zero benefit at the present time with pursuing 8k in either film or video games... there is however a huge library of 3D films that are just waiting for a re-release or for modern technology to reintroduce the existing films to a new audience.

In regard to gaming, most of the current younger generation of gamers aren't even concerned with resolution at present time. Frame Rates have dominated the conversation for the last few years. Gaming at 1080p or 1440p is the preferred method for most younger gamers that find games running at 30fps or god forbid 24fps (as is the case with film) to essentially be unplayable. The PC master race of gamers now expects everything to run at 60fps minimum just to even consider playing it... Most want frame rates of 120fps up to ridiculous 500+fps depending on the game and their setup. Their is simply no market nor need for 8k. More than that, Gaming has plateaued in recent years. The American industry is in free fall at the moment and the current generation of consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series X) have yet to arguably offer a single piece of software that feels trully "next Gen" over what the PS4 and Xbox One provided. Yes things look incrementally better and certainly run better, but this generation of consoles has done more to mirror PC gaming in all it's problems than they have to provide a true next step in the evolution of gaming.

There is zero chance Sony is seriously considering 8k at this point in time for any sort of consumer product.

I think most people don't have the screen size and viewing distance that would make any difference over 4K. And the other problem is there is so few movies that have higher resolution than 4K, like others have already posted.
