I agree. The Imprint artwork is much more elegant.

I wanted the VS, but I'm sorry, the artwork looks like @$$. I like the box and slipbox concept, but the execution is flat, like a lousy paper Halloween mask. And is that blood dripping from The Keep lettering? It's trying too hard. They also ruined the original The Keep cover on the flipside with all of that writing above. People are charging and paying a lot of money for this silliness.

If the Imprint doesn't offer anything significantly better, I'll grab the VS standard edition and call it a day.

I'm not trying to pick on your post (and I see that you said you may still pick up the VS) but I would be interested to know if other members also pass on discs due to their dislike of artwork. I can understand not buying LE due to higher costs but I can't think of any movie/series I didn't buy due to cover art.

Guys, the VS edition (the standard version at least) has a reversible slipcover and, guess what, on the the flipside it looks exactly like the Imprint edition (as what you're looking at is the original theatrical poster).

The Imprint cover is a bit cleaner looking, the VS cover has a lot of space taken up by the poster's tagline if I remember correctly.

Let me clarify my statement. I didn’t pass solely because of artwork, but due to the price. I’m just saying that the ridiculous price is being justified by subpar artwork (the box and the slip). Artwork that now sells on eBay for $129 and up. Vinegar created an exclusive box to maximize profits. I don’t begrudge them for that. But I do think the artwork is not worth the extra price in this particular case. And honestly for the price of their media they should be including a booklet with all of these releases when available. They are charging criterion prices for the standard. I’m no Criterion fan boy, but at least I get a booklet and decent artwork most of the time.

Not quite. See what I wrote initially, and as chip75 rightly points out, a paragraph above the VS reversible cover is unnecessary and unbalances the original cover art. I’m saying the imprint cover is superior only from an artistic point of view because it’s the full image when comparing the two. I'm not saying the imprint release is superior. We won’t know until the details come out.

Again, I am not dissing VS release. It's just the price tag on a box art they made in limited quantity, knowing fans have wanted this release for decades. I’m simply stating I’m not impressed by the artwork, and I’m fine with the standard edition once I can compare it to the imprint’s version.

I’m happy VS released this film. I don’t vibe with their marketing sometimes. In this case, the overpriced box art is not great. It lacks refinement, especially for the price. But we take the good with the bad.

As much as I do like these VS limited editions, they can be quite pricey. I picked up my copy from Vinegar Syndrome's store in Toronto (they got a limited amount back in December - literally lined up outside the shop before they opened lol) and even then the limited edition was like $64.99 + tax. Both that and Looking For Mr. Goodbar cost me almost $150 total (Canadian dollars, obv).

That being said, I think the artwork VS used on The Keep looks cool as hell.

A friend of mine pre-ordered that Looking for Mr. Goodbar limited box. How is the film? I’ve only seen it on a bootleg DVD.

Again if the artwork is something someone wants then of course the process might be justified. For me it was a bridge too far.

Goodbar is great. Has that typically grim, downbeat 1970s vibe to it. I really enjoyed it. If that's your thing, I highly recommend. It's a good film though, surprising that it had been out of circulation for so long.

I did the same thing with The Tenant. I’m a huge fan of the film but passed on the awkward window box in favor of the standard release. It’s a fantastic release. I just didn’t like all the impractical and unnecessary window dressing. Others loved it.

I've been meaning to pick up The Tenant, ngl I actually love the window design on the LE.

Ha! See, there is something for everyone. They still have 1000 copies left, and at a reasonable price.

Russ, all movie quibbles aside, as a fellow So Cal forum member, I wanted to send well wishes to you and yours during this time of stress. I'm grateful there is a place to discuss the movies we love with people who care. Ironically, so far, I've been lucky here in the valley, but others I know have been less fortunate.

Sorry for derailing the thread. Back to our regular programming.

People hate the new art on many releases now. We're just puting the new 4k disc in old bluray packaging. But I totally agree, smaller labels should try harder when charging double for a special LE.

Quote:
We are truly thrilled to announce the inclusion of feature documentary A World War II Fairy Tale: The Making of Michael Mann's The Keep, in our upcoming 4K Limited Edition of THE KEEP! ☠️⚡🪖

Stewart Buck, Stéphane Piter, and Alex Kuciw have been working on this incredible documentary for almost fifteen years, a deep-dive into the full story behind the tumultuous production of the cult classic film.

The team have unearthed a treasure trove of extremely rare material and special content for the documentary, and have undertaken over one hundred interviews across the globe, to leave no stone unturned.

This is a definitive companion piece to the new 4K release of the film, made with love and uncompromising detail, finally making its long-awaited official debut in our release.

We still have more surprises to uncover for THE KEEP - stand by for full release details and pre-orders opening in coming months.

There's a label out there that may actually be superior to Vinegar Syndrome? Say it ain't so!

Jokes aside, looks like this release will smoke the paltry-by-comparison VS edition. Wouldn't it be funny if Imprint also has access to a longer cut of the film? Needless to say, I will be buying this if only for that doc.

You and me both. But look at it this way; a year ago or two ago I'd have said it was highly unlikely we'd see a release of this film on any format any time soon...now we have a choice!

While I'd love to finally see this documentary, it's going to take including the alternate ending and/or cuts of the film to get me to import this one again.
