No, I was wise-assing for my own amusement, but in truth, while I’m not staunchly pessimistic on it, I’m not holding out the highest hopes here either. I’d say 70/30 in favor of us getting the blurry dvd-level filmout look.

You should compare them in motion. While its true the 1080p BD looks like it has more grain in screenshots, upon actual playback it looks like weird, slow moving digital noise. That may be exactly why they chose to do the filmout because while the 4K is softer it looks less artificial and ugly in motion.

In the past, if Umbrella has done a new 4K scan they state so in the details of the item (such as Dead End Drive in 4K). In this case, there is no mention of a new scan so I'd bet you'll get exactly the same picture as the Lionsgate 4K.

Entirely possible, though all this crystal ball gazing has become interminably tiresome, but I’m still not convinced some of the gross softness of the Lionsgate 4K isn’t from how it’s been encoded (not dissimilar to how David M. himself admits to taking a little off the top of bonus feature interviews to help with compression). And is it a given that DNR has to be applied before the “hand it to FiM for encoding stage”, never after? So, the hamster wheel keeps spinning—buy this at risk of a bad encode but knowing it can be easily sold and recouped, or wait for reviews and risk missing out on the L.E. Life is a dice roll. Place yer bets.

I don't think I've ever won a bet with Umbrella having an unadvertised world-first 4k release with a new master.

IMO the only chance is if they don't get it from lionsgate

good chance the reason this was treated the way by lionsgate is because the DI or whatever their source was, was a mess to begin with

If the blu-ray was indeed from the DI, look at this ugliness in the BD:

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=3&x...1&l=0&i=7&go=1

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=3&x...5&l=0&i=5&go=1

So yeah the 4K is softer, but that may be by design if that mess on the BD is what the DI looks like. and on top of this the blu-ray "grain" looks like a slow moving mass of digital noise, which the LG 4K does away with

but note, even the method LG used for the 4k doesn't fully do away with 100% of the artifacts (see windshield trim), but it makes them a lot less offensive

Official word from Umbrella Entertainment this morning:

”Daybreakers fans, unfortunately we have had some setbacks on our upcoming release.

With the assistance of the Spierig Brothers, we have been working on improving the master to ensure we can provide the definitive experience. This process is proving to take more time than expected.

Thank you all so much for your support and patience. We will send out an email to all customers once we lock in the revised release date.

In the meantime, stay out of the sun and drink blood responsibly!”

I told you they wouldn’t be foisting that tragic earlier 4K transfer on us again, but noooo, everybody had to embrace pessimism.

For whatever it’s worth, the title now shows a June 30th release date. Likely not set in stone considering this morning’s communication, but it at least gives us an idea of the timeline they’re expecting to fix what needs fixin’.

Ah...but it certainly looks like they were going to use the extant master to begin with, yes? And there was you relying on all sorts of semantic hoopla and bizarro reasoning to insist that they weren't (David wouldn't be seen dead encoding this! No-one announces new 4K masters these days anyway! etc) which is where the pushback came in. There was zero evidence apart from your infernal optimism; if you'd just said "I wish I wish this was a betterer master" then fine, but noooo, you have to do that thing of pulling all those specious qualifiers out of thin air.

But hey, now that they've actually announced that they're doing work on it (which I thought labels didn't announce any more, wink wink) and will set the release back a ways then I'm happy to say you were right and I was wrong. But I still need more than someone's hope/belief as proof of something.

It still sounds to me like they're just tweaking the existing master as opposed to starting from afresh, no?

You’re so cool, Brewster. They said from the very original announcement that they were working directly with the Spierig Brothers on this so this doesn’t read as the Spierig Brothers swept in at the last second and saved us from imminent danger, but that the goal from the outset, with Umbrella and the Spierig Brothers united, has been to improve upon the earlier 4K release and they discovered along the way that their original projected timeline fell short. By all means, cleave to your beloved pessimism and defend it mightily with your quaking fist, as I know you certainly will (even when Geoff is wrong, he’ll make sure you know he’s Big Picture right) but it was as obvious as daylight to me that it was highly unlikely we were gonna get Lionsgate 2.0.

Their wording is vague for sure. I doubt that this is some full-on OCN rebuild - just me and my pessimism again - but hopefully they've gone back to the DI at the very least. I don't see what else they could do to fix the existing 4K transfer, apart from burning it with fire.

According to the website blurb the directors were involved with the packaging, booklet etc, sure, but I know from actual experience that that isn't an automatic read on them redoing the transfer, not least one which they had approved already. For Second Sight's The VVitch they had Eggers intimately involved with approving everything re: the design and artwork and just used the existing 4K master, with the project getting so far along they had Fidelity do the authoring, disc testmolds were done and being sent out for reviewers, then at the very last minute they aksed Eggers if he wanted to supervise a new master.

So maybe that tale is grounds enough for being more optimistic from the outset with Daybreakers, not less, but it's all the other flimflammery you were pulling from nowhere to justify it that didn't make any sense to me, and still doesn't TBH.

I'm all for holding a release back to allow for improvements but why do these things always pop up so close to the stated release dates? I'll never understand that. Do people come in at the last minute looking to tweak for kicks? Gives folks a rush? And why are modern films so problematic to get right on 4K? There always seems to be some issue with DIs.

I work for a travel agency that’s hired an outside adult learning expertise vendor to assist us with redesigning our training program from the ground up and I can tell you, as one of the company experts pulled into the project, it starts with people high up the ladder, divorced by one to many steps from the “boots on the ground” process over which they have charge, feeling certain they can have everything complete by date X without realizing the dozens and dozens of curveballs along the way that will throw off their overly optimistic projections.

Perhaps, after letting a random unenlightened intern fingletwang it about for three months without supervision, someone actually looked at what had been cobbled together just before sending it to pressing, and realized that it still looked like festering donkey twig-n-berries? Not a hard repeat-scenario to imagine in 2025. They also may have grossly overestimated their ability to successfully tweak the existing master, with disappointing results, after a period of procrastination.
