I have the Mill Creek edition, the terrific Sony from the UK that was exclusive to HMV (with the correct aspect ratio) and will definitely get the 4K. The soundtrack is one of the best things to ever grace my ears.

I've always had mixed feelings about this one - the effects and acting have not aged well. Still, it was definitely unique and would fit in nicely with my 4Ks of Dragonslayer and Masters of the Universe.

Neverending Story is conspicuous by its absence in my 80s fantasy shelf, I just can't justify spending hundreds on that collector's edition.

Regarding the acting and effects — I think the leads are fine, though their roles aren’t as interesting as the supporting characters, so they didn’t have overly much to work with, but those wonderful supporting characters are brought to life by a supporting cast chock full of top drawer British character actors, all turning in memorable performances. Lots of quotable dialogue too. And Derek Meddings’ practical effects have aged quite well overall IMO; love the Glaive in flight, love the stop-motion crystal spider, love the Slayer deaths, love the optical effects during the sword/spear/laser battles, love the model work. And the sets are fantastic, vividly designed and always eye-catching. The magnificent score by James Horner brings it all home. I really bonded with this one as a teen, and grew to love it more than Star Wars, an opinion I still hold. I’m so glad I didn’t waste my money on an overinflated eBay purchase of the OOP Umbrella Blu. I would have preferred a mondo deluxe boutique label box set with booklet, but I’ll happily take the 4K/Blu-ray combo steelbook.

Krull deserves a fandom as much as any other film, it's all subjective. But, even back in the 80s I recall the effects being chastised - everyone could clearly see the wires on the Slayers as they 'scaled' the walls of the fortress. I'm with you on the supporting actors. . .the Cyclops manages to be creepy, interesting and sympathetic at the same time.

Not every effect in the film holds up equally of course, but overall I think they hold up quite well, and will always have a certain charm.

My only quibble with the film is the ridiculous decision to overdub Lysette Anthony. I’d love to hear her original voice recordings restored to the film; I think it would markedly improve her portrayal as captured on film, which can’t really be fairly judged due to the dubbing. And, my quibble with the steelbook cover art is that some genius decided to mess with the original poster design so that the top of the Beast’s head is cut off and the original tagline “A world light years beyond your imagination” is omitted.

If the KRULL 'book follows the fashion of some other SONY steelbooks such as Body Double, the title will be part of the J-card, which will fold up and out of the way, revealing the rest of Beast's head.

The VFX are pretty terrible actually for the most part. Matte lines galore, things just look literally pasted on. And that blurry ending battle with the glaive and the Beast - you can't even tell what the hell is going on! Same year we got Return of the Jedi and The Right Stuff as far as quality visual effects.

I mean, the movie's a guilty pleasure and I'm more than likely going to get the steelbook but come on...

How dare you unjustly malign this cult classic!

This shall not go unchallenged...

Nah, they’re actually not. The Empire Strikes Back had matte lines galore too, and in Return of the Jedi even moreso (forest bike chase, I’m looking at you), so I definitely wouldn’t use RotJ as a comparison. So yeah, I still think the practical effects hold up quite well comparatively overall, gotta disagree with you pretty much 100%, nothing remotely guilty about KRULL for me.

The matte work in Krull is laughable compared ROTJ.

And you didn't address the WTF blurfest of the final battle.

The Mill Creek release was one of their better titles. The 5.1 I recall having that 70MM vibe to it. Pretty underrated movie too!

I used to have the DVD with the commentary on it, so nice to see that return with some extras I don't recall seeing before.

Yeah, a real aberration for Mill Creek for sure. MC deservedly gets a lot of shade but Krull elevated them forevermore in my eyes. Couldn't have happened with a better title. Probably the best barebones disc I've owned. Handily tided me over in the absence of a 4K for quite a few years. In fact I almost double-dipped for that Retro VHS edition.
