Most of the one's I got were around the $20 mark. Now the bluray's are 29.99 to 34.99. Also before you bash me, most reviews say that there is not a huge difference between upscaled dvd's and bluray.
How big is your TV? Obviously, the larger the TV the more likely you will be to see the improved resolution. If you are watchin on a 37" screen and sitting back 6 feet, it may be hard to see the difference between 480i and 1080p But if you are 8 feet back from a 63" set capable of 1080p, i assure you you will see a significant difference.

Back to you original question on why does Blu Ray cost so much? Blu Ray requires re-investment in new production equiment. Manufacturers have to re-coop that cost. As time passes and the production equipment depreciates, costs passed on to the consumer will go down.

Also, the way it works in hi tech is you make the best margin on your best stuff. So the overall business plan is to make maybe $0.50 on DVDs, and $5 on DVD players. Q: How will business survive given all the overhead costs??? A: By making $5.00 on BDs and $50 on Blu Ray players. Then the overall business can survive and make the profit it needs. BDs and BD players will come down in price slowly as investment costs are re-cooped (this will be especially slow in the near future since the competing technology has given up the fight!!!), then they will come down in price dramatically when there is a new Margin Leader product the manufacturers can rely on -- What's next after BD? Prices will plummet once everyone has fibre to their homes and can watch 1080p and uncompressed 7.1 audio on pay-per-view for $3.99.... )

Yes I do own a ps3 as my bluray. I can tell a difference in spiderman3. I have it in both formats. I am not just reading something and spitting it back out. I guess at 43 I am just not as naive as I used to be. Sorry, I guess these forms aren't any better than the ps3/xbox ones. You suck, cause you can't see the difference, your system sucks. blah blah blah. I can see the difference. I just expect more for my hard earned money.

you get what you pay for nobodys "bashing you" but would you go to a car dealer a week after the 08 760Li came out and say $130,000 but I want that car for the same price as a Camry ... Like I said go to a REAL A/V store and watch a quality set up run blu-ray if you then cant see a difference then, well all I can say is stick to dvds, understand a 60'' Polaroid, Maxent, Westinghouse exc. TV isnt going to do what a 60'' Pioneer,Sony, Marantz,Nakamichi, Samsung, LG, sharp Panasonic w/e

Retail for new Dvd is ridiculous for 25.00.
Hmm is this high price to keep the gap smaller on Blu Ray so more people buy blu?
Online most blu rays will be cheaper than a new DVD retail.

But older dvds can get dirt cheap though, a few bucks and puts rental stores out of business.
In fact Blockbuster shut down in many locations here while the only one left doesn't even carry blu ray.

Be honest with yourself. It is not that you can't see the difference. You can and you appreciate it. The problem is that you are frustrated with the high prices. You are not alone. I am too. It is nothing to be ashamed about. I am 38 and I am not naive for buying into the format. If I felt that way I would still have a tube and rabbit ears antenna.

Once again, I never ever said that I could not see a difference. Never mind, you spend your money on what you want, and I will spend mine on what I want. Sorry to bother you all. Just looking for ways not to spend 30 dollars or more on blurays.

That's fine for us, the enthusiasts. What blu-ray has to do, to keep it from going the way of HD-DVD (and apparently CD in the music world), is make products embraced by a large portion of the general public. The half-speed mastered Original Master Recordings (records) I own are audibly superior to normal records, and most people who have listened to them agree, to CD's. That company (and most of the Hi-Fi industry of the 80's) is now dead, while low-fi MP3's and iPods prevail. Everyone that comes to my house tells me how amazing blu-rays look on my Sony 70" XBR2 tv. Then they go buy $5 to $10 DVD's and watch them on their standard DVD players. To keep blu-ray alive, it must NOT become a niche product. TV's have become more affordable, but $30 movies and $400 players aren't helping, especially while Microsoft, Comcast, and others are certainly trying to kill blu-ray by accelerating implementation of Hi-Def downloads via cable and the internet. I hope the major hardware and software manufacturers make blu-ray affordable quickly.

That's like the 8th time he's said he can tell a difference but everyone seems to keep talking about how he can't. He's saying he CAN tell a difference, but he's not sure if he wants to spend $30 per movie.

When DVD first came out, I spent $35 on Armageddon... then $45 on the Criterion Version (yes, my first 2 DVD's ever were the same movie... apparently I have no problem with double dipping). Now I wont spend $2 on a DVD.

If you want Blu-Rays for cheaper, I say just check Amazon.com and other places. I remember when Blood Diamond came out, Best Buy was asking more than the suggested retail price for the Blu-Ray for some reason. They ended up correcting it and lowering it to $24.99, but you can get the same movie for $19.99 on Amazon.com (and you can use the links from this site to do so!). Or you could purchase them used. Plus there's a lot of BOGO sales.

For me, the $30 price tag is worth the quality. Do I hope they lower the price? Absolutely. I think it's important to lower the prices because of people just like you where they're not willing to spend that kind of money on a movie. Especially $30-$35 for titles from Fox where they don't even have all/any of the features on the movie.

Seriously. If the picture is not that big of a difference to you and the price is to high, then the choice seems pretty clear to me. Stop making threads and be satisfied with your DVDs....

yeah, but when making that argument you have to look at history dvd prices where right around if not higher in some cases then blu-ray is now.. Like I said 700$ for our player then Xmas of 1999 almost a year and half later $350 for a player, movies early 05 resident evil 2 dvd 24.99 bestbuy.. Prices will come down in time.
