#1 being the best... #6 being the worst:

#1 = PCM (Lossless-Uncompressed)
#2 = DTS-HD MA (Lossless-Compressed)
#3 = Dolby TrueHD (Lossless-Compressed)*
#4 = DTS-HD (Lossy-Compressed)
#5 = DTS (Lossy-Compressed)
#6 = Dolby Digital 5.1 (Lossy-Compressed)**

* Because it often uses Dialog Normalization, Dolby TrueHD is ranked below DTS-HD MA. DTS-HD MA also tops out at a theorectical maximum of 24.5 mbps vs only 18.0 mbps for Dolby TrueHD.

** Because of Dialog Normalization and lower bitrates (448 kbit/s) Dolby Digital 5.1 is ranked below DTS (768 kbit/s or 1536 kbit/s depending on the movie)

I'm really an audio noob, so forgive me.

Let's say this update does come during the summer, and is accurate. What would be the price range of a receiver that through HDMI would allow me to get these audio codecs?

I'm considering cancelling the Onkiyo 705. I'm very happy with the 604, but if I don't need it to decode dts-ma, whats the advantage of up gradeing my receiver

No advantage at all unless at some point you want to own a player that is capable of bitstream (i.e. Panny BD30)

Hell, I'd settle for a simple disc resume capability...

I'm getting the Yamaha 663 from J&R for $399 (phone in price). That is a new rec that will handle both PCM and the new codecs (though since the PS3 can't pass by bitsteam, so I'll have the PS3 convert to PCM)

Does any one want to buy my 604? I've got the original box and the 604 is like brand new. My 705 already shipped. I'll make you a good deal

does look like a nice receiver. looked on the specs page, and all looks good except for one thing: doesn't say a word about which hdmi version it is. anyone know if this is 1.3, or is still stuck in 1.2?

This is great news!!

What will be beter? the ps3 decode dtsma to pcm, or bitstream in terms of aq?

I was told it doesn't matter...but is that correct?

It only decodes if it sends it to PCM.

Via Bitstream, it passes the signal on to the receiver, and the receiver does the decoding.

Theoretically the methods should be equivalent as far as AQ is concerned. Perhaps, if the PS3 does not have to decode the signal itself, it will allow more processing power for other tasks. How much, I haven't a clue...

From what I hear, there is a hardware limitation on the PS3 that prevents it from bitstreaming the signal... this is just what I've heard...

It currently sends TrueHD via PCM.

i like it a lot!!

I like the sound and features, But the only regret i have is: I think it's it not the most beautiful receiver out there. But that is only a personal matter.

It has more power and features that i will ever use. Most off all i like the way it sounds! in my opinion it is absolutly stunning!

i had a Harman/kardon avr 330. But the 705 has much more "punch" in the sound. let's say a bit more aggresive.
And it is more future proof.

You can get a receiver (if you are willing to let the PS3 do the decoding, and it looks as though that's the way it will work; the same as True HD) that'll do it for under 300 bucks. Receivers that are capable of doing the decoding themselves start at around 400.

That's about where your prices are going to start.
