I have to agree. I went with the Pioneer. I have the 5070. I guess the new ones are even better, but I don't know for sure. I stopped looking at teevees after I bought mine because I'm content for the next few years. Trust your eyes.

I would go for a 1080p plasma if you are use to a 1080p already even if it is an elite.

I really appreciate all the responses to my thread, but it definately has not made the decision a no-brainer. Panny 85 or 800, both @1080p and 30K static contrast or Pioneer Elite Kuro @720p?!?! I wish I had more patience for the neww Panny 800, but I am itching to get one of these sets. Again, saving more is not really an option, I am stuck @ a $2500 budget. Please keep the help coming.

Have you seen the Elite in person yet? If not, bring your BD movie to the store and see if it satisfies you.

Not yet, I will take your advise on that though. What are some good BD's to take (I have about 30) that will give me a good idea of performance?

The problem is that since the 800 Panny is not out yet, I can't compare to the Pio. Also, I don't think the PRO1150HD will be on sale @ $2500 for much longer. So, I can't decide whether to jump on the sale, or wait for the 800.

Take a few BD's, go and audition the 60" 1080p Elite KURO, put $2,500 in the bank......wait.

Ha, ha.

I auditioned the 60" 1080p Elite KURO just last night, it's the best display I've ever cast my eyes on, hand's down.

I still think the -800 and -850 series from Panasonic are going to be superb, but currently that 60" 1080p KURO is the best thing I've ever seen.

Are u in such hurry tho? If not I would just wait for the new 800 out. IMO Pioneer is nice tho but Panny is more of value tho.

Bring any of the "Tier 0" titles in this thread and change the settings of the tv as described in the reference settings in this thread, then enjoy.

Does Pioneer post their static contrast ratio anywhere for the PDP5080 or PRO1150?

Yes, and the poster said they currently HAVE $2,500, hence my comments to put that $2,500 in the bank and WAIT.

(ie - you need to leave your $2,500 in the bank and let it grow)

D'ya get my meaning?

I read this somewhere off a canadian retailers website... who knows if it's true... but I stuck with it ;-)

http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/products/6...maTV/KURO.html
Here's a european website

16000 to 20000 : 1

I would think if these numbers are true and comparable, the panny would offer better contrast.
If you want best bang for the bux... I would do the 800 panny. If you don't want to afford the panny... stay 1080p and do the PZ85

They are both about $2500, which is the top of my budget. I sit about 8-10ft away from the set and it will be facing a window with blinds on it. So a good anti-glare coating is a must. The obvious difference between the two is 720p vs 1080p and I am a bit scared of going from a 1080p DLP to a 720p plasma. Native 24p for blu-ray would also be a plus, but I don't know how noticable that really is. The set will be used about 60% for sattelite from Directv (mostly HD), 30% dvd/BD, and 10% PS3 gaming. Again, any help is greatly appreciated.
why not wait and see pz850 series from panasonic
