I think most of us assumed it was an actor (my first guess was someone that played in gangster movies)

but here are some of my thoughts, maybe they might help others

First I was Johhny : at first I thought the first character he played, but then maybe his real name?
Then I was Frank : second role or just one of the characters he played?
Sometimes pulling the strings : does it mean played the "boss" or is it that he was also a director
Once with James in a tank : tank? is that jail?
