Sorry, but simply put if the camera doesn't record on film stock it is not a film camera. It's a video camera. The Panavision Genesis camera, though fancy it may be, it still just a glorified HDTV camera modified to be able to use Panavision film camera lenses. The Genesis is also prone to recording the same video-ish kinds of flaws as any other video camera. Fast movement across the frame, especially in low light levels, give that camera fits.

Well Digital Video Cam have noise in low light, and Film camera have with higher gain (or ASA or ISO call it what you want) also give a more grainy look.

Both have their issue. With Digital you can switch gain in real time, but that cause inconsistencies in the end. With film camera, you can use multiple ASA level but it cost a lot, so you use 1 type and live with the shortcomings.

They mention the codec as "TBA". Doesn't every player tell you what codec is being used?

It's VC-1, as reported by other reviews.

Sorry to re-activate an old thread but I just saw this movie in blu and felt the urge to comment. I first saw this on dvd and really enjoyed it, however, the blu version makes a very noticeable improvement. The realistic or 3D type image from blu-ray has always been the most enjoyable feature for me, but with Cloverfield, it really brought me into the movie when compared to the dvd version. It almost felt real, like I was behind the camcorder. What an improved experience! If you're into monster type flicks, I recommend checking this out.

I was pretty satisfied with the PQ.

The movie itself was a little short. That was a little disappointing although I'm not sure what else they could have done with it given what it was.

I really was tempted to see this in the theaters and on SD - so it was an agonizing wait. Also was way into the viral marketing campaign pre-release so I was very curious about the monster.

Without getting too much into the movie I thought it was very well executed for what it was - a POV monster movie.

I do hope they make a sequel - although I think the idea of the guy on the Brooklyn bridge with the camera basically being the sequel is retarded. We've seen this attack. I could really care less if we see more of the monster romping around the city from a different POV.

Since it seems this monster was just a baby I would prefer a movie that would give a little more in-movie info on the monster (the bloop?), sea-bed nectar, Slusho and it's parent company, etc. I felt I got more out of the movie by digging for some extra bits of info the movie never touches on.

Perhaps that is all part of the formula for success JJ and Matt were looking to create (and straying from that might do more harm than good) but this was a pretty awesome monster and just rehashing POV footage of the same attack doesn't seem like enough to keep it going as a franchise.

Just to add to what you said... Everyone should watch the movie once first then watch it in Special Investigation mode. It's chocked full of info about Slusho, Sea Nectar and different characters. You can almost see where they are headed with the second film. Also just before the movie ends, when Beth and Rob are in the Ferris Wheel saying they just had a great day, look closely at the horizon when they show the beach. You can clearly see something (monster) fall from the sky and crash hard into the water!

Yeah, I watched the special investigative part - and the scene at the end is supposedly a satellite from Slusho's parent company Tagruato. The exact sequence of events regarding the existence/emergence of the monster remains a bit murky.

Ordered from a guy I know on Ebay who imports US Blu's to his store.

Never seen the film before last night and the verdict............

Not only was the film great but the Picture and Sound rocked my world.

Seriously 11/10, 6 stars etc etc...

One of the best Blu-Ray's I own!!! period.

Great blu-ray, finally got to watch it last night. The whole shaky-cam thing didn't bother me much at all.

I don't know if it bothered me or not. The 3 beers I had during the movie might have been the reason for my slightly-off stomach.

The 3 I had afterwards went down much easier.

Does anyone know how to access all the easter eggs? I know there are quite a few of them I just don't know how to access them. I know only about one where you go to chapters and select 13-16 and wait one minute and 17 seconds, chapter 17 shows up with some extra content.
how do you access slusho commercial?

There are some Easter Eggs described in this review, near the bottom of the page:

That's pretty much the way I felt about it. I really didn't think I was going to like the way it was presented (shaky-cam, etc.) but they did an excellent job of making it "feel" like I was there with them. Without that, I think it would have been an ordinary monster movie but with it, it's one of the better ones I've seen. I really liked it.
