Paramount Cloverfield (2008)

I am so anxious to find out of the PQ is worth the purchase or not... I have it on pre-order, for dirt cheap thanks to the strong aussie dollar at the moment - it works out to 50% the RRP of new release titles in Australia...

If you saw the movie in theaters, you wouldn't be anxiouse to see the PQ. Don't get me wrong, I'm bringing this one home, but basically the entire movie is shot with a home video camera and the quality reflects it. So basically as far as PQ goes, I'm expecting a crystal clear camcorder quality picture, expect lots of grain and noise in the picture.

Yes, it's supposed to be there. The PQ on this one was intentionally low quality so it will be the same way on the Blu-ray. All that grain and noise that was intentionally put into this movie will be in HD.

Great flick, but it's not one you would buy for the PQ. It just won't be an exampel of what Blu can do.

yeah, I am in aggreance with you jpthomas - but I am still expecting it to look half decent on Blu-Ray... it was shot HD, so I'd imagine it would have some decent detail in it still... handycam factor aside...

This link describes which camera was actually used for the film.

The Real Camera Behind Cloverfield

I have high hopes for PQ.

Im sorry but your wrong, the majority was filmed on the Sony Cinealta and Thompson Viper (not cheap handheld cameras, but professional cams).

The portion of handheld camera shoots for the flashbacks (pre s**t hitting the fan) was the Panny AG-HSC1U which was minimal and select other scenes were filmed using the Panny HVX200 which is by no means a home video camera (mine cost me $8,000).

I think it bods well for the fim makers that they used these cameras and people think they look "home made" But seriously the PQ should very good.

Cloverfield was shot with a 1080i high def camcorder, 28 Days was shot with a 576i standard def PAL camcorder.

You should see a difference.

If you do a side by side online using the SD trailer and the HD trailer off of the website, you do kind of see a decent difference. Certainly enough to get me psyched for it next week.

This is going to look great in HD, if any of you have seen the HD trailer of the PSN store.

It's not shot on video cam

It's a special Panavision 1080p Camera that is Hand Held (but bigger than you think). It was filmed in 1080p and they added more crap over it to give the 'cine camera look' but it looked 100x better than 28 days later looked at cinema..

I'd have to disagree. This has been said many a time, but just look on PSN, download the trailer, and then watch it. The PQ for the PSN-released trailer is outstanding considering what it is: a trailer. No trailer ever trumps in PQ over the actual feature. And since the trailer looks great, the film can only be better.

I doubt the PQ will be low as you say. I think it will look and know it will sound great, but whether or not "home video" style is great is up to opinion.

If the PS3 HD trailer is any indication, it'll look pretty damn good for being a "shakycam" type movie. I really enjoyed the movie and I have it preordered. I'm looking forward to it.

It will not be in the top tier of titles, but it should be able to hold its own considering what it was shot with and the trailer itself. Considering you can get it from Amazon for a pretty good price if you like the movie it may be worth the purchase.

Here are re-compressed 720p shots of Cloverfield blu-ray (these are just to give you an idea, the 1080p blu-ray looks better)
