Things I've heard in Best Buy
1.) Upconverting dvd player to 1080p was better than bluray player of any kind. 2.) That the KDS-R60XBR1 was a true 1080p HDMI tv. (*******s, this taught me to really do my research and NEVER trust a sales person, the KDS-R60XBR1) 3.) That HD-DVD color and picture quality was better than bluray, and would eventually devistate bluray in the market. |

Seriously, what's the point of a thread like this? Are we going to start one for every single store, service provider, and customer-based operation? Everyone has bad stories, some have truly horrible stories. In fact, there are whole web sites dedicated to them. Really, get over yourselves and so something constructive.

Back in Spring of 2006, while I was doing an audit on a Best Buy store, I was making chit-chat with the manager, and I asked him if it was true that the PS3 would use a blu-ray drive. He said yes, but then added that it would be a bad investment because games would run $120-$140, and movies would be $80-$100, and instead recommended the Xbox360 because soon an HD-DVD add-on drive would be available. I told him I knew about the format specs, and that I didn't think HD-DVD stood a chance, and I would not be investing in it.

Some Best Buys are better than others. The issues are important. Instead of ranting about them and being elitist, "those kids", help them get the information they need to do their jobs better.
Best Buy employees say things like, "Monster 1000 series is better and you need it" because if they don't, they lose their jobs. It isn't the sales associates fault that the company made a decision on a corporate level to sell Monster and not Blue Jean. To cite issues back in the begining days of the format war (all of a sudden I thought of, "You fought with my father in the Clone Wars?!") There was a lot of misinformation and uncertanty out there. |

I have noticed that they have come a long way. BB on the other hand has been slowly raising prices making them the wrong place to shop. High prices and bad customer service no thanks

However, Sears has started thinking like BB and lowered their base pay and they consistently have been lowering their commission rates, as well. The way I see it, if they're going to pay little and there's no commission, what incentive do I have to actually learn about the product? Very little. I steer clear of any teenagers who think they know everything but in reality are nonks - noobs of no knowledge |

i have to give props to a Best Buy employee I met on Tuesday.
This guy knew his stuff. He was correctly explaining to a customer what 120hz was, what a 3:2 pulldown was, and that some 120hz models (naming them specifically and correctly) would still do a 3:2 pulldown and not correctly display a 5:5 image. I was like dang, whats this guys handle on blu-ray.com. |

Off topic, but I got an estimate for replacement windows (just storm windows actually) for our new house from Sears, and knew I was in trouble when the salesman drove up in a 400 series Mercedes !!!!!!!!!!

I agree that some of the BB/CC/Large Chain employees are clueless, but not all.
I once asked (back in November) if the PS3 played DVDs (isn't specifically stated on the box, and I honestly wasn't sure), and one blue shirt told me, "I don't think so. I believe it has its own special format to play. I can ask about it." I was more surprised that he didn't know what the 'special format' was...haha. I also had someone who worked in the cell phone section tell me that spending over $50 on a bluetooth headset is ridiculous, because "they all do the same thing." I wonder if he had the same views about spending a certain amount on TVs, phones, and stereo equipment? I should have asked. More recently, I asked if they carried the Monster Clean LCD cleaning kit. The lady told me they did, but she said, "You don't need it. Just use a little water and a paper towel." I should have asked her if they'd give me a free TV once my current one is covered in fine scratches and watermarks. I ended up getting the cleaning kit on Amazon...for $7 cheaper. ![]() |

Then, while talking business later, after I asked for a price I KNEW was above invoice and would have sent him back some money, he ACTUALLY used the salesman BS line of, "So, you want this car for practically nothing and leave me with no profit? I have kids to feed you know!" I then told him he should think about selling one of his nice cars or one of his houses then, and walked out. The look on his face...PRICELESS!!! ![]() |

Being an ex-employee of Best Buy, I'd say that I was better then most of the employees at my story when it came to knowledge. I know a few people that just BS'd their way with customers just to get a sale.
I actually did research in my department, as well as ask other associates from other departments for input (on whatever department they were in, I sold in car audio, and zoned in home theatre too). I would tell customers about bluejeancables.com and monoprice.com, as well as other providers that sold products cheaper, I was never one to force a sale on a customer, because I myself knew what that was like. -Matt |

From the few examples I've witnessed, the BB and CC employees in my area actually seem pretty good. The times that I overheard them helping customers during the format-war, they seemed pretty balanced and knowledgeable.
Just recently, I overheard a BB employee helping a guy looking at plasmas and LCDs. The BB employee even told the customer about the various TV settings used to grab a customers attention and that for actual viewing a lot of that would need to be dialed down or turned off. For the most part though, unless I over-hear a conversation, I won't have any info of this nature to relay. I don't really ask store employees anything about the products unless it's more-or-less store related. Such as, is this in stock, I can't find this new release on the shelf, can you check in back for it or look it up to see if you have it, etc. |
