If it was the case that a standalone SUC player was not real-time and had to use a hard disc in the player to render it to for hours, wouldn't they get in trouble for allowing dvds to be copied to a hard disc without the copyright holders permission (or would that fall under fair use)?. I doubt the DVD forum would be pleased if if they did though. Not that they'd need to as I find it unlikely that they'd release a standalone DVD player that didn't play DVDs in real-time. Seriously though if this tech is in any way better than normal up-conversion why wouldn't any Blu-ray owner who also owns some DVDs that aren't on Blu-ray not want this as an option in a Blu-ray player? Maybe this tech could also help in up-converting 1920x1080 content to even higher resolutions (for when higher res HDTVs become available at reasonable prices).

unless there is a very large HDD and i can SUC all my DVDs while I sleep only once and then from then on I just have to bring up the file on the HDD to watch it, I would never use this even if it was considerbly better than upconversion. I rarely watch DVDs anymore. maybe 1 or 2 a month. |

I want to Blockbuster to see if they had The Counterfeiters on Blu-ray. They has a shelf of them on DVD, but not Blu and the guy at the counter asked if I wanted the DVD. I said, "No, I think I'll wait for the Blu-ray."
The point is, with that many copies available, even upconverting is not as good as the real deal. Not to mention sound is not touched at all, plus it takes 4-6 hours just to start watching. Good point though... I take it that doing this would put the movie onto a hard drive, does that mean you can watch it any time? I am sure someone will hack that! I think someone should look closer at this, the entire idea might be shot dead just from that! |

Then someone provides evidence that entertainment is in fact, a "recession-proof market", to which Lee says "Nuh uh, it could totally happen!" even though it's pretty much a given that it won't. He's like a little child who just wants to be contrary. Maybe he's regressing in his last years. |

I'm completely angry and biased, but I worked for the eastern U.S. division of Toshiba for a couple of months as a temp...2 times.
The first time was with a documentations group who were a good bunch of ladies, but the second time was for their claims department and the DICK in charge was a complete B A S T A R D. I fully understand that it takes a certain type to be able to get money from people who don't want to pay, but this fool would call his wife and even yell at HER on the phone. He just couldn't get enough. As far as I know, he had been there for years and if they hire people like THAT then you could just imagine the rest of their decision making systems. This was in 2001 during 9/11 There were talks of a "new format" for the future even back then and how they were going to "crush sony" ![]() |

Bonding time is pretty cool until someone says something stupid. Only then would you have realized that it was best to invest in Blu-Ray.
