Default Firmware 2.42 Killed My BD Drive

It wasn't immediate though. I downloaded it and when on my merry way. Everything seemed to be normal. I played a few games and watch a few movies without a hitch. Then I was showing off Planet Earth and it start to freeze up a bit. I checked my disc to see if it was clean, which it was, because GHIII had issues when it had a little fingerprint on it. Didn't fix the problem. I blew it off as probably a glitch with the FW. Then I got home on Sunday and found Starship Troopers waiting for me. We popped it in and started watching. About 45 minutes into the movie it start to chug and then froze completely. Took out the disc, reinserted... it stopped about the same time and place. Now I was frustrated. The last time this happend was back with FW 1.5 where the audio skipped and it was remedied with a complete HDD restore. This is when the problem really gets exasurbated... because after the backup and restoral process the PS3 quit playing discs entirely... DVDs, BDs, CDs, anything at all. I put a disc in and the loading icon shows up but nothing ese... no pop up, no nothing. I tried every single game I have and a few dozen BDs and DVDs... nothing.

I checked the Official PS forums and people are reporting the same problems or other weird issues, like no HDMI output, or mic issues, but mainly the disc not reading media. Anyone else having issues??? Aside from a dead drive, my PS3 is still running as i can play PSN games and watch PSN movies/shows.

The PS Forum Thread.

The kids there are calling those with problems Xbots and Trolls... ironic.
