Sounds like the same issue as most people who have problems with their PS3 was...the BD drive diode failed.
Call Sony.
it's wasn't weeks... more like a week. and it was functioning PERFECT prior to this. the FW can change hardware configurations and options... perhaps it's conflicting with something. I called Sony, they said send it in, i have a coffin from before, but managed to to exchange for a new PS3 instead. I'm crossing my fingers it IS a fixable firmware issue... Heroes comes out soon!!!
