Anyway, all my issues seemed to be related to the auto-cal with the mic. Once I disabled that (set it up manually), things have been great. I do plan to try it again at some point though since I figured it has to be something I'm not doing correctly that is messing up the auto-cal. I intended to try it again a while back but I've been really happy with my settings and hated to muck with them now that I've got it just the way I like it.

Anyway, a few examples of the issues I had with the auto-cals...I did have issues hearing the dialog but it might not be the same sort of thing you're having an issue with. For me, one time it was because the levels of the other speakers were too high (especially the surrounds -- I could barely hear anything over them). On one of the other auto-cal attempts, I thought it sounded great until I played a few movies I was really familiar with and discovered "holes" in the soundfield (i.e. volume level was way too low for some sounds making me initially think that the sound -- usually dialog -- was being cutoff). For example, in Sunshine, I couldn't hear the computer talking in some of the scenes. In The Cave, I couldn't hear the dialog in one of the scenes when the guy turns around -- his back to the screen -- but was still talking. In another movie (a DVD this time to see if it was an issue for them as well), I couldn't hear the backup singer in one of the scenes.
I did the auto cal with the mic. I find the surrounds over power the f/l/r speakers. What kind of settings are you using?

Ya but is that just for the military to buy from? i see you have to sign up with SSN and other info, so i think it may be military only.

I bought a refurbished one for $257 from Ecost. I'm sure they have more of them.

circuitcity.com has them new for $380, and if you have their rewards card you can use the "$15 off purchase of $99 or more" coupon. So you can get it new from CC for $365. Not bad for circuit city.

Default switching senerio

Can anyone solve this small, but annoying problem, when I turn all the components on, my Onkyo 606 automatically switches to GAME/TV, even though nothing is hooked up to it, after switching to the CABLE input( 2 times), it then recognises it and stays there, this happens EVERY time I switch on the system, I have NOTHING hooked up to the back in the game/tv mode..
Thanks

also noticed that Ecost has the 705 for under $400 on their website, that seems like another smoking deal.

It is - eCost is an authorized Onkyo seller for factory refurbished items AND Onkyo puts a 1-year warranty on their refurbs which is pretty killer.

I've ordered a few items from eCost and been very pleased with the results.

Recently picked up a JVC Cassette Deck in mint condition for $35.

Love those prices. Now if only they'd get some of those $1,200 4308CI's in.

It'll probably be tomorrow evening before I can tell you (assuming we don't lose power). Earlier, they were making a big deal about Hanna so I disconnected stuff so I could move it in a hurry (if need be). To me anyway, it's looking like it's starting to fizzle so I may connect things back up tonight if it continues to look like it won't be a big deal.

Looks like I set things back to manual and just did a very basic manual cal from the center location...

- set the speaker distances myself
- set the front left/right and surrounds to 120hz (the auto-cal changed the surrounds to 150hz even though all the sats are the same). I'll have to double-check but I may have set the center to 120hz as well (even though the center is slightly different).
- eq settings are all at 0 for all speakers and ranges
- front and right level is at 0 db, center is at 6 db, surrounds are at 4 db (my surrounds are currently on the floor and pointing up at an angle), sub is at 0 db.

The auto-cal had set everything to negative db levels for some reason. I guess it doesn't matter though. I just had to turn up the master volume more. Still, I wonder why that is done. On the Yamaha receiver (got it free with the speakers) the master volume (and the volume range I use on it) is on the negative side. I've been meaning to search for info on that to see why that is done.

I am thinking about buying this receiver. One quick question first, can you connect all your video sources and output them to your tv with one single hdmi cable? I have a lot of cables running to the the back of my tv so i want to know if i can just run the siganl through the receiver via hdmi.

Yes, but analog sources (Wii, basically anything except HDMI) will only be upconverted to 720p. HDMI sources will just be repeated meaning that they will still be at 1080p.
