Euro PS3: 1,000 Backward Compatible at Launch
Concentrating on the 'big titles' at first. By Patrick Klepek, 03/01/2007 The backlash to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's announcement last week PlayStation 3 would launch without hardware emulation via the Emotion Engine sent ripples through the online community. Everyone expected Sony to eventually start stripping parts to reduce production costs, but before launch and removing a feature the rest of the world already has? That's why people are upset. Sony's Phil Harrison, president of worldwide studios, recently spoke with semi-official Sony blog Three Speech and expanded upon the question of "why?" More importantly, however, he confirmed they're aiming to have roughly 1,000 PlayStation 2 titles backward compatible via software emulation by the hardware's launch on March 23rd. More updates via firmware are promised, but at what frequency? We'll have to see. Harrison tried to run a bit of damage control, too. "Our thinking involves being able to bring the latest hardware specification of the PS3 to Europe, although that does mean an initial slight reduction in the number of PS2 components. Price reductions are something that we wouldn't comment on specifically. But you know the business model very well -- we strive to get the cost of manufacturing down as soon as possible, and as soon as we can pass cost savings onto the consumers, we will." |

Microsoft tried software emulation with the xbox 360 and it's ok. Sony is in charge of what happens with the ps3 and they are doing what they feel is right. It's possible, that with enough updates, that a european ps3 could play as many ps2 games as other ps3's to a point where you couldn't even tell that the two ps3 aren't even the same. Another strong point is that many ps3 games are already out with more to come and europe has more ps3 launch game options then we did in the states.

Apart from the backwards compatibility, which has been fueled by fledgling websites hoping to get more hits even though (if they're smart enough to be a gaming website) would know that even the first launch had the same and sailed off that issue, what I'd like to see is SCE open up the PS3 to all PS2 games regardless of region.
Right now PS2 games are still region locked on the PS3. Opening it up would be a wise move, I think. fuad |

The new announcement that "1000's" of games will be backwards compatible at launch already has to be better than what they xbox 360 has achieved thus far.
M$ initially made a promise that a vast majority, if not all, old xbox games would be playable on the 360... and it wasn't until well past the launch that it was learned that it would be far less than that... duping a lot of people. Now the backwards compatibility has been forgotten. Sony at least gave the heads up before - and already has more old games that can be played at launch and a commitment for more in the future. When put into perspective, this news isn't bad. Not the best -- but what are you going to do? Buy a 360 and get really ******? PS3, hands down, is still the best option out there. |

People have rather short and selective memories. Euro 360 back compat is poorer than its American counterpart. Fewer compatible games and if you use a VGA cable expect to see a lot of 'please use a component cable to continue' messages, even in games than played perfectly set to PAL60 on the original 'box.

![]() I have Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero. It may not matter if I through my USD$10 (500 pesos) down the drain (or down the trash can/recycle bin/waste recepticle) after I sell my PS3 (once I get my PS3) but it would be nice if they would disable the region locks for ALL PS1 and PS2 game titles. Other people (especially hardcore gamers) WILL appreciate such a feature even more so I hope SCE would consider this in a future firmware update. |
