Hope someone can help..........
I'd imagine they're the normal 14mm Amaray's, just pick up a spare tray to add the other disc to your US or UK case (I think the tray's aren't always compatible though, a Viva tray won't always fit in an Amaray case and vice versa).

I can't imagine that these screenshots represent what is on the finalized disc. If that's the case, then someone at Freemantle has made a major error.

Where are these screenshot comparisons coming from?

This is distressing. I may have to get the Freemantle disc for the excellent extras, but I'm really not a fan of the approach that they have taken if that Home Cinema Choice article is correct.

Hopefully, some authoritative sources will weigh in in the coming weeks.

This looks like the Predator debacle all over again. One version looks filmlike, but doesn't have any bonus features, the other does have extras but looks awful. I love insightful bonus features, but the difference between the two is so huge that anyone who wants this movie, should go for the MGM version.

Why?

I don't have this disc yet but am very much looking forward to it because I don't believe that the screencaptures posted there are accurate (the colors of the U.S. screencaptures, for instance, are not identical to the colors of our U.S. screencaptures). And if anything, for this film I would go for rawer and harsher colors rather than the lifeless color-scheme on the U.S. disc. The contrast levels, however, worry me.

The U.S. disc was sourced from an old master that was prepped for DVD - and I am absolutely convinced that the color-scheme is off. I need to see the UK disc first, but Peckinpah's films do not look dull. This is a fact. On the contrary, they overflow with colors and often look quite edgy (for example, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia is a film that has a very rough look).

Another film that does not look dull:

Exactly ehy I qualified that statement by saying: "I can't imagine that these screenshots represent what is on the finalized disc." because I don't. If the final disc looks like those screenshots then we have a major problem because...

and this is why. The color of the image is not as troubling as the overblown contrast. I am further troubled after reading the article from Home Cinema Choice which states that:

Quote:
On the other hand, our sources indicate that Fremantle sourced a rarely screened theatrical print from Buena Vista to serve as the source for its Blu-ray release of the film, claiming this offers a much more accurate brightness and contrast for the film than any previous home entertainment release.
which makes it sound as though an excuse is being made. I'm all for having vivid, even saturated colors, but the extremity of the visuals in the screencaps are what bother me. Hopefully, the actual disc is better-resolved, or some very knowledgeable people weigh in and say "This is what Straw Dogs looked like in 1971"--from those screencaps alone, I am not convinced.

Actually, it does not sound like an excuse at all, and the issue is not in how everything is resolved. Clearly, the MGM disc is softer and noisier, and clearly (from what I see) the new scan has grain resolved better.

There are two issues here:

1. Colors. Which transfer has more accurate colors? As I said before, I want to see this new disc first, but there is no doubt in my mind that the MGM transfer has problematic colors. I've seen it.

2. Contrast levels. This is the bigger issue. Again, I have to see the disc and how the film looks in motion. I don't trust screencaptures. But one thing I know for a fact is that Peckinpah's films do not look dull.

Amazon sends me the occasional product for review: they're almost always straight-to-DVD films starring the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin, but one of this week's choices was Straw Dogs, so I've a free copy on its way. Given the sentiments on here I might just sell it on, or I'll trade if anyone wants it...
