interesting story:

i went to see the sixth sense in theaters for the first time and this lady next to me would not shut up for the first 20 minutes or so. she kept talking to her friend next to her and i overheard her say
[Show spoiler] bruce willis is actually dead the entire time
. obviously i was pissed off, but halfway through the movie the lady ends up having some kind of heart attack and has to be wheeled out of the theater and taken to a hospital. funny how fate works in mysterious ways? in all seriousness of course i actually felt bad, but thats what happens when you're a movie spoiler

one other time my wife(then gf) and I went to go and see Gladiator when we were visiting her hometown for a break during college. it was early afternoon on working day so we thought the theater would be empty and the movie had already been out for many weeks.

We got there and there was only one very large man ahead of us in line. I knew he was trouble when he started a conversation with the person selling him the ticket, she had a strange look on her face like "omg, weirdo alert".

So he went inside and we bought our tickets and I told my wife "hope he isn't in our movie".

So we get inside and find the place absolutely empty so we pick a nice seat in the center of the seating...I'm smiling and loving this already.

The lights go down I hear a noise and turn to see who dares to ruin my perfectly empty theater . I see big dude with a lot of food in his hands and a giant drink.

he waddles down the aisle breathing rather hard so I expect him to sit at a good distance away from us as that is what I would do if the theater only had 2 other people in it. This guy is different...he skipped one row and sits directly in front of us...I'm like "fine, he paid for his ticket, he can sit where he wants".(if he had picked a seat next to us I would have moved)

the previews start and he's munching away loudly. then he starts making comments to himself and I look at my wife from the corner of my eye and she matches my furrowed brow.

"be cool, be cool, he'll shut up when the movie starts" my mind tells me.

the first battle starts and he turns around and looks directly at us and says "they don't make battles like that anymore!" loud enough for us to hear over the stampeding horses and cries of war.

we both look at each other and then over our shoulders. I fully expect that he had some friends come in late who sat behind us and he was making a statement for them as surely no sane person would do something like that, right?...right??!!

wrong. no one is behind us. he was talking to us. this guy has no friends.

at this point I'm not sure what to do, my mind is racing...should I nip this in the bud, should I ignore it? how crazy could this guy be??

So now my mind and adrenaline start pumping in unison preparing for a possible battle and I'm thinking "what would be the best way to hurt this guy if he gets belligerent". my imagination runs wild with images of me grabbing him from behind while stabbing him in the throat with his giant straw and stuffing popcorn up his nostrils.

at this point he has made a few more comments directly at us but I can't hear them as I'm in a state of shock by his dementia. my wife is sitting there with her mouth open and the opening battle hasn't even ended yet.

He turns to make another statement and I react by saying "Hey bud! please shut the **** up as we didn't come to the theater to hear your comments".

I prepare for the retort but it was unnecessary as he looks embarrassed, turns around slowly, and remains quiet for the remainder of the movie.

It takes me a few minutes to get back into the movie but I had to put a stop to the madness. We still tell that story to people whenever someone brings up the old "I hate people who talk in theaters" issue.

after we both thoroughly enjoyed the movie we started talking about this guy on the ride home and realized what a sad lonely individual he must be to have to strike up conversations with perfect strangers in such an unlikely atmosphere. I felt bad for him but.....

I've had the displeasure of watching many movies with question askers. So many in fact, that I've standardized a response to any plot or character based question. I highly recommend it, as it works quite nicely...

"You never find out."

Depending on the frequency of the questions coming from your co-watcher, you can elaborate.

Examples:

Movie - Iron Man
Time - First Ten Minutes
Question - "How does he make the suit?"
Answer - "You never find out."

Movie - Sunshine
Time - First Thirty Minutes
Question - "Do they make it?"
Answer - "You never find out, the movie isn't even about them."

Movie - The Matrix
Time - First Ten Minutes
Question - "What's the matrix?"
Answer - "..."

The very structure of narrative film is to spend the first 2/3 of the story asking questions, then using the remaining time answering them, hopefully in a creative and thought provoking way. People who won't give the film the opportunity to answer it's own questions annoy me. To say the least.

Although, now that my answers have become so standardized, I watch many movies alone...

Ugh thats what I hate the MOST, when people ask you what the end of the movie is. Like why would I tell you how it ends?

anyone know any of these people?
im one of them!

My friend is the worst to go to a movie with or even watch a dvd at home, if he seen the movie and i havent, he is like "ohh this is a good part coming up" or " this bit is hilarious" i detest it! when the bit comes along i dont find it funny because he has ruined the moment for me, when watching a movie, just dont say a f**** word, its like a family thing, my brother and i KNOW not to talk during movies at all, but some people really get on my tits

I am sure he felt bad for yelling at you but come on dude, you got to see his point of view. He is trying to enjoy a movie with his wife, he sure doesn't need you to be there ruin their evening.

Now I understand teabaggins reaction quite well. I don't like having complete strangers starting talking to me like they are my best buddy. Drive me nuts. I am a person who respect others privacy and I cannot stand when someone I don't know just feel it's quite alright to invade mine. Plus at the movies, after paying 15$ (double on a date and whatever else) then having someone just talk and talk, I would be real MAD

My dad's like too, at least he used to be. He's always predicting the next line before the character says it even when he's never seen the movie. It's actually pretty amazing how good he is at it.
