The proper way to pluralize Blu-ray is

Blu-ray discs. You cannot pluralize Blu-ray as it is a format.

"Blu-ray DVD" will always be my biggest pet-peeve. Especially when used by so-called "professional" organizations like Blockbuster or Walmart or Chapters/Indigo.

So did the fools call CDs 'CD LP's' when they first came out?

Well.. I have thought about this. As all members know, it is technically incorrect to call "blu-ray disk" a "blu-ray DVD". However, what is the easiest way to tell public that blu-ray is a new format and it is better than DVD but similar in physical aspects to DVD. Isn't it feasible to call blu-ray disk blu-ray DVD in places like Blockbuster or Walmart to get the message across easily with less pain? Just asking....

The problem with calling it Blu-ray DVD is that a large portion of the public will buy one for there DVD player. People need to come up with a way of describing Blu-ray, that is different from DVD. I know, why not just call the new format after the laser it uses. Violet-Laser. No, that does not sound nice.

Blu-ray is good.

Would you be laughing if it said "buruurei"? How about "ブルーレイ"? It's not nice to laugh at other languages for not being able to transliterate 100% (or for making minor errors in transliteration), or I'm going to start laughing at how you don't spell or pronounce "津波" or "空手" correctly ("tsunami" and "karate").

edit: forgive me. I misread syncguy and a response telling him he was wrong when he was actually right. The portion of my post responding to him is gone now.

Agreed. Distinguishing between 'r' and 'l' is very hard for Japanese since that distinction doesn't exist in their native language (they have 'rl' type of sounds, which are phonemes that are in the middle between a r and l).

I can understand it strikes some western people as funny but please keep in mind that, for every wrong transcription Japanese make, there are 99% of western people that can't correctly pronounce even simple Japanese words such as Tokyo (even news ankers get that one wrong!).

It's so much more worse when you see a guy in a forum trying to defend Blu-ray or owns it and is a fan yet still calles it Blue-ray or Blu-ray DVD.

Yes, agree. blu-ray is good. However, when someone is presented with that terminology it is an abstract term. It is hard for them to relate that to anything. I think that is the key reason some places call blu-ray, "blu-ray DVD" to make people to establish some linkage with a concept already they have in their minds.

Then why not DVD Videos or CD LP's. People are not that stupid. Give people the info and let them make the choice. This miss labelling confuses the issue as now they have 3 choices. DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray DVD.

I consider a thread like this completely asinine, a waste of time and space.

The only reason I stoop this low to actually post a reply is that I GET ANOTHER POSTING POINT TOWARDS BEING A GURU. Now, that is something important!!
