Yeah I know that, I heard it on both the core and the master audio file on my PS3 though.

Tried Sin City on Sony BPD-S1 and heard the same problem. Bad disc maybe? Nobody else has heard this?

Default Same Issue Here

Hey guys,

I've been trying to resolve this issue at two other forums (AVS and Audioholics) with no result. My current setup consists of a PS3 feeding a Marantz SR8001 via HDMI. I took get the crackling effect, and it happens on both hdmi and optical connections. I also swapped out another PS3, added an external amp to my receiver, used an old Marantz receiver, and switched out all cables, speaker cables, and even the speakers. All of this led to nothing going away.

My only assumption is that its a PS3 issue. I just took my Marantz in to get the latest firmware (h55 for anyone who has this receiver) and to check out the crackle, but I doubt they will find anything.

I noticed the crackle in both the center channel and the fronts with a variety of movies, IE Dark Knight, Iron Man, Juno, Indiana Jones, etc. Both TrueHD and DTS-MA exhibited the problem actually. But the strange thing is, it doesn't happen all the time. I was about to buy a standalone Bluray player and check it out, but have yet to get the chance (or don't feel like spending 300+ on one with internal dts-ma decoding).

I strongly believe its a PS3 issue and hope a future firmware update fixes it. Otherwise I wasted 400 on a shoddy blu-ray player.

I have or have watched all of those movies multiple times and have none of those issues in my setup. I'm much more inclined to believe it's a receiver issue, especially considering the issues that users like JJ have been experiencing with Marantz of late.

Aramis is right. It's a Marantz issue. It has problems with several players, including the PS3.

But I have this same problem on both a Denon 4308 and the Pioneer VSX-91TXH.

I have heard of reports of the same issue with Marantz, Denon, Pioneer, and Onkyo. Clearly, the issue does not have to do with the receiver. I listen to CD coming from both a Marantz VC6001 and Rotel RCD-1055 and both analog and digital connections with no issues whatsoever. Watching DVD via the Marantz with HDMI, analog, or coax also results in no problems at all.

I have been seeing rumors that one of the firmware revisions, possibly around 2.41 has led to this issue. The crackling is also A LOT more common in games, but that may or may not be related to our issue.

I'm reluctant to reset my PS3 to the default location, because I don't want to lose my rock band information (yea I could back it up, but its not 100% guaranteed).

I wish I could do some more testing, but my receiver is in the shop getting the new firmware and to check out the DSP for at least 3 weeks . Why so long? Your car would never be in there that long.

My old Marantz 7002 was shopped for 3 weeks.

Apologies, I meant to say it was a PS3 issue.

I appear to have gotten away from it with my new BD35 + Pioneer setup, but I still get crackling when playing Resistance 2 from time to time.

Same thing here...
Onkyo 805 with PS3, Band of Brothers on Blue, PSB speaks.....
And... Nothing... Everything sounds great...
I think is a issue with your PS3 console.

Greetings,
I have a ps3,and a BDP-S1 and my kid has a PS3. I tried all 3 with my onkyo
885p through HDMI. There was no problems with any of them playing sincity. I'm in canada though, so maybe a different release.
Also, if the crackling or scratching sound is only happening at certain frequencies you could have a possible problem with voice coils on your midrange drivers.

So, what do you think, if I get the Panny 35, this would resolve my problems as far as crackling goes?

What audio options are turned on in the PS3? I'm wondering if the receiver isn't handshaking correctly with the PS3 and telling it that it can handle sample rates that it actually can't?

Yea i have a ps3 myself and i have it hooked up to surround sound through a klipsch mini reciever called the klipsch pro media 5.1. I also get cracking through my speakers when i play both games and movies in basic dts(i dont have dts ma capability yet) for example when playing resistance 2(dts), uncharted sometimes(dts) and dts encoded movies.......but the interesting thing is that it does only occur on certain dts titles, because it doesnt happen in battlefield bad company(dts)

I've never herd of this problem with Onkyo receivers. But every time I've herd someone say that they hear a "crackle" sound when playing movies on their ps3 they have a Marantz receiver. I don't know but to me there is a compatibility problem with a chip on the Marantz receivers and the ps3. Tis a very strange problem.

Which is what I was referring to.

So again, do you think if I were to get a new BD player, this could potentially resolve this crackling problem, or do I just wait for Sony to maybe fix this in a firmware update?

I am sorry to tell you, the quality of your optical cable should have no effect on this crackling. Because it is a digital light signal, there should be no effect of the signal within the wiring itself.
