For starters, Costco, Sam's Club, BJ's, etc, etc do not count as competitors. The reason for that is not everyone can shop at those outlets. You must pay to be a member and a lot of people will not pay to shop at a particular store.

Here in my hometown of Columbia, SC, we only have those listed above along with Best Buy and Wal-Mart. Considering that BB is a "electronics" store, with Circuit City going bankrupt, they virtually are the only electronics store now.

Even if you didn't like Circuit City, they did have their good sales every now and then and they kept Best Buy honest in their pricing. This is a sad day for competition and for anyone cheering on the fact that CC is going under, you need your head examined.

The more competitors, the lower the prices. How is that too hard to understand?

The same way it was rumored that they would file bankruptcy and close stores just a few months before it actually happened? I feel bad for them but in this economy and with Target and Walmart around there was no way they would survive.

You are making this a regional thing when infact Best Buy is a national account that sets pricing for its chains at a corporate level. We dont have a Best Buy here, only a Circuit City. So does that mean target and Wal-Mart are gonna jack up their prices because CC disappeared? Competitors remain even if they close holding prices at bay. Im not sure what CC you have, but price a TV, then price that same TV on Amazon, Thats a no brainer for me.

I despise the arrogance of that place and their demise appears evident. Maybe its just my store but Thats my opinion of them

Um... Hello?

You cannot compare the two. Circuit City is a B&M store and has a lot more overhead than a warehouse based internet retailer. Most times, the online source will be cheaper, but not always.

As for TV's, I got my 46 inch Samsung 1080p 120hz (LN46A630) LCD HDTV at Circuit City for 1399.00!

Now, everywhere else was a few hundred more. As for Amazon.com, they currently offer the same TV for over 1500.00!

LOL 1500.44 to be exact
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN46A6...1772125&sr=8-1

If I can buy the same product at both, sure I can compare them. They base their pricing on retailers like CC and BB. You paid $1483.00 for that TV with SC sales tax, when Amazon has it now for 1500.44 shipped for free, no tax. I am willing to bet when you got that TV the price was lower, because Amazon does match ads and reflect their prices accordingly.

You obviously live by retailers and thats what they rely on but sales are trending to online merchants more and more every year which is causing the loss of revenue dollars thats impacting your B&M stores negatively.
I believe my community will fare fine without them, yours may not, but if they were that concerned they should have been shopping there more regularly

Regardless with CC gone I dont see BB saying, lets jack our prices up 10% Consumers arent stupid, they see BB doesnt have the greatest prices but BB realizes Wal-Mart and target are there to capitalize on their ignorance. Once Blu-ray is mainstream in Wal-Marts, Best Buy will be forced to follow and regardless of CC's status at that time.

Anyways enough effort has been spent on this on my part, you have your view I have mine,

TV's and such, I would prefer to buy from retailers. Everything else, I do tend to purchase from Amazon.com.

Amazon can't be beat when it comes to BD pricing.

I dont feel bad for corporations closing. In fact its the nature of capitalism, not everyone makes it. I do however feel bad for all the people loosing their jobs. I blame the administration for the international economic crisis.

Circuit City Auction Begins Today

By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 1/13/2009 8:50:00 AM

New York — Circuit City's attorneys will begin accepting bids for the bankrupt consumer electronics chain today at noon.
The two-day auction process, which will be held at the lawyers' Times Square offices here, was delayed for 24 hours as the retailer received “expressions of interest” from potential bidders to keep the company in business.
The company said it is also needed the additional time to continue exploring financing alternatives.
The auction will begin today with bids for the chain's “miscellaneous assets,” which include inventory, property, Internet operations, Firedog assets and corporate airplanes. Wal-Mart is among six bidders for Circuit City leases.
A store-closing auction for all inventory, fixtures, furniture and equipment at Circuit City’s retail stores, warehouses and distribution centers begins Jan. 14 at noon.
The critical “going concern” auction, which will determine whether Circuit City continues operations, begins Jan. 14 at 3 p.m. Two “highly motivated and interested parties” have largely completed due diligence on the company and are close to making a deal to buy the business or provide additional financing as it restructures, the retailer revealed last week.
All offers will be evaluated by Circuit City and representatives of the creditors' committee, and the highest bidders could enter a final auction on Jan. 15. A hearing to approve the sale will be held in a Richmond, Va., bankruptcy court on Friday. That's when the company's credit facility expires and the retailer will be unable to continue operations.
Circuit City said in court papers that allowing it to continue operating on a national or regional basis through a buyout or alternative financing would be in the best interests of the company and its creditors. It said it is “optimistic” that it could strike such a deal with one of its white-knight bidders.

Just shut down now and liquidate your assets and pay off any debt you can. Better to do it now than to string the employees along with false hope.

i thought circuit city was great and far better than best buy. best buy sucks more than circuit city. circuit city was a fantastic store that i will be sad to see leave. it's nice to see all the jackals out feeding on circuit city's still breathing body before it's pronounced dead. what vultures!

actually, i found circuit city's price equal to if not better than best buy. they've been a great competitor. i bought sheryl crow's album detours that she released last year at circuit city for a whopping $9.99. that's an amazing price. and sounds like competition to me.

My friend was able to get a full refund from CC on a bundled Sony BDP-S350 that is still out of stock. Just in time, it appears.

It's probably about time online retailers have to charge sales tax. Partly to help the economy, and also to make the competition fair.
