![]() i gotta agree but that goes without saying, i know when i look at the list of movies i use to show off my system they are "guy flicks", batman, transformer, loud action oriented movies, not to say that some girls havnt commented on the difference, they just dont seem to exhibit the same awe factor my guy friends do. i agree i dont understand how people that have seen my setup are not dying to go blu on their tv, i have only had one friend convert lol and he has horrible taste in movies so it sucks for me as far as borrowing is concerned |

It's the adoption cycle. Blu-ray, like any other product, has a different value for different people. People like us on the forum will obviously spend more on Blu-ray to have it before most other people. This holiday, Blu-ray has shown it will stay in the market and go beyond niche like UMD, LD, MD (outside Japan).
In a couple years, probably all DVD players sold in store will also play BD. When people replace DVD players, they will go for BD. Eventually, new releases will hit <$25. $23 is my guess because of inflation. |

When I got my first Blu-ray player, my wife noticed a difference between BD and DVD immediately. She commented on the clarity, sharpness, along with the color difference. The first BD that we purchased/played was Underworld: Evolution. Since we had it on DVD as well, she made the comparison and was hooked. Anyone that can't see a difference between BD & DVD needs a CATSCAN ASAP! ![]() |

There is no reason BD can't last 20 years. As long as people like buying discs there shouldn't be any problem. Technologically you would need even bigger screens to get a benefit of a higher resolution. 3D seems to have been taken care of and will get better.
The biggest factor for not going blu seems to be that people don't want to pay for movies/or pay more/ and blu ray does nothing for storylines of movies. Which I agree. Its just a better medium to show off with, but you don't need it. Well I do. Sorta. Ok I give in, I'm a sucker for it. My friends don't have enough expendable income to buy blu ray. Plus they are not the type of people that want libraries of movies either. If I could, I would put all my blu's on a HDD because I think having all that packaging lying around is just a bit much. I'm up to 126 and the end of next week and its getting a tad ridiculous. |

When I first got HD channels my wife couldnt understand why. So I showed her the difference between the regular channels and then the Hi-def version of the same channel.
"Okay honey here's channel 5, now here's channel 5 in HD." She was impressed. Movie wise however. Well, since I dont have HDMI cables, due to the fact my Sylvania only has 1 HDMI input. The pictures are better but not as impressive. |

There is this dude I work with who bought Saw V on blu. So I ask him:" U buy blu-rays now?" Here is his response:
" yeah but I play it on my PS3, it is not high definition but that what I can afford; I wish I could afford high definition DVDs. High definition DVDs are 5 times better". I was like: Dude, blu-ray is high def, PS3 is high def and moreover blu-ray is 1000 times better than HD DVD. HD DVD is dead. |

All I do when my freinds come over is pop in a dvd, then a blu ray and right away they see the difference. I also pop in one of my blu ray demo discs and that changes their minds. I have coverted alot of people to HD tv and blu ray the biggest one was my mom and step dad. They saw my 46inch Bravia and how good the picture looked and that was all she wrote. They went out and bought a 40inch Bravia and a blu ray player. Dont underestimate blu ray because it is the future and the future is BLU!

Sharper and Brighter will tend to give a movie a few too many flaws with some titles. Quote:
Most people I know don't like the motion judder that blu-ray features, sure it's the same as what's shown at a movie theater, but they prefer the modified smooth sped up DVD version, it's what they're used to. and 1080p 24p is similar but nothing like the real workings of a cinema film projector, not even close. |

I had Monster House in DVD and double dipped for the blu-ray. Both movie menus are the same except for the resolution. It is a very easy and clear way to show people the DVD movie menu and then switch to the blu-ray. The difference is very apparent, even with both video feeds going through component cables. |

I've never had someone say what's the big deal after seeing Blu-ray on my TV's. The only thing that happends is they want to know if I can 'help' them pick out an HDTV, BD player, BD's, Harmony(1000

I didn't read much into DVD the way I read into Blu Ray. what I have heard there was a lot of people who wanted to cut down DVD the same way they are cutting down Blu Ray. Look at DVD now it is the biggest selling form of home media (movies) ever I do belive, 10 years and still going strong. I say we will be saying the same thing about Blu Ray in another 10 years.

It's all demonstrating some interesting aspects of human behavior. The difference in video quality between Blu-ray and DVD is actually enormous... much more than the jump from VHS to DVD. That is fact, not opinion. And yet not everyone seems to perceive it for what it is.
Humans are creatures of habit. And switching to Blu-ray represents a change. They are naturally resistant to that. They're used to DVD. DVD is comfortable. They have long since learned to ignore all of the defects, artifacts, and blurriness in DVD. Their minds are filling in the blanks in DVD already... so when they see Blu-ray, it doesn't seem like such a jump to them because their brains have already been 'upconverting' to that quality. Case in point... I ended up watching the Simpson's movie on DVD rather than Blu-ray. I thought it looked attrocious. There were prominent compression artifact rings around their eyes. When I commented about this to the others watching with me, they simply could not perceive them. The effect was not subtle at all. It's not like it took sharp eyes to see it. It was amazing to me that they couldn't perceive the rings. But there it was. Their minds were automatically erasing the artifacts. It's much like how we all have blind spots at a particular position in our vision just offset from center, but we can't normally perceive them. Our minds fill in the gaps and errors automatically without us even realizing it. Where people really notice the difference between Blu-ray and DVD then is not going forward, but going backwards. Once you've gotten used to Blu-ray, then go back to look at DVDs again... well, your mind has gotten used to not erasing those defects subconciously. And so you tend to perceive them for what they really are at that point. So in the end... when someone is first looking at a Blu-ray video, whether they can tell the difference between that and the DVDs they're used to depends on the degree to which that person sees what is really there rather than what they want to see. It makes you wonder how much of your perception is actually imagined, doesn't it? Because a lot of it is. |
