Default Did Sony underestimate MGS4 PS3 bundle demand?

I was wondering do you guys think Sony screwed up their one chance to make a real jump on the other consoles? Most stores sold out right away meaning that they could have sold 2-3 times more. Or are they creating a Wii effect? Are people going to wait or are they going to give up on waiting. Did Sony underestimate the demand?

I dont think it really matters. If you want MGS4 and you dont have a PS3, you will just pick up the 40gb. The average consumer has no idea about the MGS bundle.

The Wal Mart that I work for sold out the night we got them. (We only got about 4 in) But I checked today and we have some more in. I don't think Sony screwed up, and will have no problem meeting demand.

No, I don't think a Wii scenario will occur, if you want the system with MGS and DS3, it's out there, you don't have to hunt it down on ebay or anything, I can buy one for 499 on Circuitcity.com if I want to, but I already have a 40GB so I'm happy, the 40GB Deal I got from walmart was great and I will end up picking up MGS4 once I bang through CoD4, and GTA IV. Also, I think Sony is trying to dump the 90nm versions of their 80GB Systems before they drop another 'top of the line' model, be it an 80GB, or Higher, with this new model, this will probably be released with the 65nm wafer process like the 40GB is now.

How is that not something nice to say? What is your problem? I said people will buy the 40gb regardless.

What makes you think that they won't buy a 80G? Many people were waiting for it, or is it because it outsold a certain other big name bundle un ut's first week?

Dude, he is saying that if people wanted a PS3 and MGS in the first week, and 80G was not available, they would pickup the 40G. He is saying MGS will sell consols regardless of what model is immediatly available.

Dont be a dick.

I think Sony could have sold more 80G models.

BUT, in terms of PS3 sales (40 and 80) I dont think that they lost anything.

If there were a shortage of PS3 in 40 and 80, it would be an issue, because there is only a shortage of the more expensive joint, I dont think it hurts PS3 at all...

Maybe the week spike would be bigger, but the months sales will likely be the same either way. (The people who are waiting will get theirs this month anyway.)

Also, the people who really want the 80G, they will find a way to get them. The rest of the people likely dont know or care about 40G extra and a duelshock3...

people dont want the 40gb for 2 reasons 1. no backwards compatibility(even though a lot of people dont know about that one until they find out the hard way) and 2. because the 80gb has 40gb more storage and not everyone knows about the fact that you can add those hard drives and make it into even more storage space

I know there are some people trying to get the 80GB specifically, due to PS2 playback, but I am trying to convince them that by October, we should have software emulation for PS2 playback on all PS3s.
Still, until they see it they won't believe it.
I have talked 2 or 3 guys into getting a PS3 this week. Both are looking for the 80GB model, and MGS4 is a good incentive too.
I think the bundle is a great idea, and i am sure they will not make the same mistake twice. They sold out of 80GB models before cause they didn't think it would sell that well. Well now they are re-releasing these and they don't want to miss out on the market of people willing to buy them.

i think they did underestimate. To the dude above who said "if they want MSG, they'll just buy a 40 gb", i agree this will apply for most consumers, but not for most people who want MSG4, because most of them are probably PS2 owners who will want backwards compability.

Do the new 80s come with the smaller, quieter, cooler chips that the 40s do? That's one thing I love about my 40 over my old 60.... WAY more quiet.

I was at my local Best Buy Sunday and they had a display with at least 10 bundles. I would have bought one if Wal-Mart (with a $100 gift card) had them but mine sold out before 11 a.m. when I went in there. I found out after the fact that Best Buy was matching the Wal-Mart offer.

Every Walmart around me sold out - that's under-estimating. The fact is - they could have sold more if they had more.

The Walmart deal - coupled with the bundle was huge. My buddy had been waiting ages for the "perfect" deal to get a PS3 - when I told him about the Walmart deal - he started calling - 2 were sold out, 1 Walmart had 1 40 gig left (not just MGS4 bundles were selling out) and 1 Walmart had 1 MGS4 bundle left. They wouldn't hold it for him and he sent his wife out to get it. A couple minutes later (she worked next door) she called and confirmed she got it.

There was demand - the supply should have been bigger - they would have sold more - end of story.

Sounds like Walmart underestimated the demand, not Sony in your case.

I wonder if Wal-Mart intentionally didn't order enough since they had the gift card deal going.

Any place that sold out underestimated the demand.
