So your saying if you crop 2:35:1 to 1:78:1 you are seeing more of the picture and its "true HD" now?

So you think film makers should be restricted to the size and shape of your television set?

Hardly...

This HD game really has blinded people to what movies are!!

My favorite aspect ratio is the OAR chosen by the director. I know that this has been said by many other posters, but it is the only answer.

OAR.. whatever the Director has intended for his film, I'm with it.

Though it'd be appreciated if they were closer to 1.78 or 1.8, some films need that extra scope of 2.35, such as Lord of the Rings or Titanic.

I like how sitcoms and other series are starting to go by 1.78 now, thus filling your whole HDTV. Same with "less-epic films" like 'Crank'.

This is bad.. I never knew series like 'Nip/Tuck' filled your whole HDTV, mine always had the black bars! After a year of owning this TV, I go into my DVD menu and uncheck '4:3 letterbox' and check '16:9' POOF, no more black bars. Fiddling with your settings makes all the difference - can't believe I watched it like that for so long.

I always watch the movie in the ratio the director intended it. For personal preference, I really like 2.35 and 2.40:1. I like it wider especially for old school kung fu flicks.

My fave is 2.38:1. 2.35:1 just doesn't do it for me and 2.40:1 makes me hurl.

I can't wait for the day when I sit down in the cinema and the film is preceded by a message...

"This film was originally going to be shot in 2.35:1 cinemascope aspect ratio so as to more dramatically reflect the full scale nature of this epic adventure, but the makers of this movie realise that a bunch of 17 year olds will want their HDTV pictures filled in 6 months time so we have elected to film it in 1.85:1 instead. We hope this doesn't affect your enjoyment of what should have been an amazing spectacle too much".

BTW, which has smaller black bars, 2.35:1 or 2.40:1?
