Look at it this way... did you see boobs and ass when you were a kid? Did you turn out fine?

This is why we have such a pussification of America right now... kids are being coddled? too much and when they do get into scuffles or have sex, they either get their ass kicked or get a chick pregnant.

If we just explain how life goes at an early age... say 11 or 12, I think things would just fix themselves.

Sorry just my point of view... I lost my virginity when I was 12, smoked weed when I was 12, and drank when I was 11. All experiments (still experimenting with 2 of em) and I turned out fine.

Right now? It's always been this way. Americans are EXTREMELY insecure and uptight about nudity/sex. I have never understood it.

seriously...

go watch some of the "PG" movies of your youth that you enjoyed...you will be shocked at what got through back then...Goonies has so much swearing in it, I was floored when I was watching it with my kids....how funny I never realized as a kid.

Just One of the Guys....PG....bewbs....srsly...

we coddle our kids today...don't be surprised when the youth rebels.

To combat this coddling phenomenon, we should all show Rambo and porn to our kids as soon as they're born

Neither.

Too many parents these days think it's okay for their kids to act like idiots as long as their not stepping over some line when it's their job to teach their kids morals and sound judgement.

"Well, my little Johnny goes out and gets blind drunk but at least he's not dealing drugs."

"My little Johnny is in 7th grade and is having sex with one of his classmates.. but at least he's not promiscuous."

The PG-13 rating was established until 1984, when Speilberg suggested a PG-14 rating. However, not many films were given pg-13 ratings until the nineties when outraged parents forced the MPAA to rethink their ratings. This was due mainly to foul language in films with PG ratings like Spaceballs, Big, Beetlejuice, and Eight Men Out which all used the word "f@ck" at least once.

I don't think teaching kids about sex and the human body is "acting like an idiot." There's nothing harmful about either of those things and, if taught at an early age, they'll probably have more respect for their own and others.

Kids today are developing MUCH more rapidly than they did when I was younger. They know more and they know how to do more. That means its the parents responsibility to teach them and guide them into living a responsible life. You can't stop knowledge from happening by coddling them. They're going to find out, one way or another. You're better to be the one to "break them in" than to let it happen from another child or parent.

They are, but that doesn't mean we accept the unacceptable. We should teach our kids about sex, reproduction, the human body, and the like but in a way that satisfies their curiousity and doesn't send bad messages like, "it's natural - go for it" or "be ashamed".

I don't like the media teaching young people about violence and sex before they hear it from their parents because the message is different. For one, parents can teach their kids to show discretion whereas soceity usually tells us that self-indulgence is okay.

Party hardy cuz u only live once, am i rite?

I must be in the minority, because I don't see a lot of coddling. I see a lot apathetic parents that let their kids run free, out of control out of sheer laziness and it's occuring more and more in modern times.

If you think it's the media that will teach your kids, you've got another thing coming. OTHER kids are going to teach your kids. Going to school is going to teach your kids and it won't be coming from the teachers.

And I'm not understanding the "it's natural- go for it" comment. It IS natural and, like it or not, they WILL "go for it" when the time comes; whether it be 12 or 16 or 20.

I don't see sex between 12 year-olds as natural. And if it is, then who's to stop a 12 y-o and a 20 y-o from engaging in a perfectly natural act?

The difference is one is an adult, capable of sound judgement and can think for him/herself. The other is a child, that requires leadership and teaching.

And hey, as long as kids hear it from the parents with a good message. Kids will be kids, but they still require a guide.

Well, I guess you're getting into a grey area of what is "experimenting" and what is "natural" sex. There's nothing to stop a 12yo and 20yo from engaging in "a perfectly natural act." The law says it's wrong but other than that, there's nothing standing in their way. However, you take away 2-3 years and that 12yo and 17-18yo are completely legal.

Sex itself is always a natural act when its between two consenting partners, IMHO. Whether or not they're both mentally capable of grasping the responsibility of sex is up for debate. However, if they're using condoms...it takes away most of that. If two 12 year olds want to have sex, they're going to do it. No parent in the world is going to be able to convince them otherwise. All you can do is make sure they're protected.

The United States has a weird way of looking at things-- as many other
posters have mentioned--- sex and nudity is somewhat okay but violence
is frowned upon in other countries as we are the direct opposite.

I remember turning on USA network one night and they were showing SCARFACE and then CASINO---I could not believe my eyes--the swearing
and nudity were absent but the violence was shown COMPLETELY UNCUT!!!

Nobody will ever convince me that seeing a bare butt or a flash of boob is
more disturbing to a child (or anybody for that matter) than a head being
split open with an axe or somebodies intestines being pulled out.

Well, that's the great thing about young people. You can make 'em, train 'em, and you never know who they'll be or what roads they'll take. Just show good judgement in dealing with them as not all violence is the same. I'd rather show a kid Rambo than, say, The Devil's Rejects simply because of how it's conveyed. Same with sex. Porn was created because some lonely soul needed to get off on something and it is not a realistic portrayal of sex at all. Sex shown in movies or TV, simply to let us know the relationship between two characters is much more tasteful. Even if it shows us a lot.

US is getting better at this. Nip/Tuck is a very popular American TV show that shows a bare ass and a risque sex scene is nearly every episode.

I agree, they're gonna do it. But as a parent I need to do everything in my power to teach my children not to get in a situation like that.

I completely agree with you James.

Just because something is "natural" doesn't mean it should be ok for kids at such a young age.

I am the father of 5, and I still control what my 14 year old watches....just because he is "aware" of sex, doesn't give him free reign to watch Superbad or other such movies.

Teach them what the "natural" way is..not the "Hollywood" way.

There will be no clear answer on this topic. Everyone can go round and round on it.
Show the kid boobs...show him violence...whatever. I saw all this when I was a kid (ahhh...seeing Porky's in the theater was great) and I turned out ok. He probably will turn out ok also.
I feel really no need to show him a graphic sex scene right now. Has he seen nudity or sex in a flick? Probably. For now though...I dont feel the need to show him.

BTW...as another poster has said. I think BOB's and Saving Private Ryan SHOULD be shown in schools. Its history...and I believe that kids should be shown the horrors of war, and taught about it. I am just going to leave the nudity part out for now.

What's the "natural" way?

Sorry. I have a knee-jerk reaction to anyone that defines what is "natural."
