get a monitor sub and you have them both .. I have a FB-210 and 1 is bottom and the other is front firing .......There is a FB-212 F/S on Audiogon 2 12s instead of my 2-10s and a 500 watt amp 895 bux...Its an incredible sub

Front firing subs tend to have smoother bass response. On the downside they need more amplifier power especially for a sealed box. However, sufficient amplifier power is very easy to get.

It took some time and effort to smooth out the peaky, rough bass response of a down firing sub I once owned by using a combination of parametric equalization in the bass and room placement. They certainly do look nicer, more like a piece of furniture (higher WAF).

I really don't think there is a right or wrong answer though. Each has advantages and disadvantages. For me, the front firing subwoofer is the best choice.
