I'm in the market for a new sub. Room size is 16' X 15'.
What is the sound difference <---newbie question) between a front firing sub and front firing sub...? The room that this sub will go in has carpet... Wouldn't the sound from a down firing sub be absurbed into carpet/padding, etc. Thanks for any advice.... ![]() |

Downward firing subs are great on carpet...... the carpet prevents vibrations etc. and you still get the deep bass of a good sub. (I have had a downward firing sub on a hardwood floor, and actually placed it on a carpet (thin small square) and then placed a piece of plexi-glass under it as well and found the results were great..... so if you already have carpet, a downward firing sub would great, just get a thin piece of plexi-glass that is cut to the exact size (so the foot-pegs are ON the plexi-glass)

It shouldn't matter either way unless cosmetics are more important.. Both are designs are capable of great sound.
I can't stress sound over looks enough.. Base your decision on the products sound and value per dollar, not it's firing design. BUT If it's a tossup and you have kids, go downfiring! ![]() |

check it owt! http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-cyl-plpow2.cfm seems to be $899 now for this model... others will sell equivalent subs for twice the price. This baby rocks! Either this or check out hsu. When I bought this sub a few months back they threw in a free t-shirt AND pen. muahahaha. I am special ;-) *evil grin* Careful watching any movies with this sub that has extreme violence and gore... you might end up dead. Oh yeah, I also have hard wood floors. This sub is perfect either way. |

Carpets do absorb sound of course, but only at higher frequencies and shorter wavelengths than sub-bass.

Down-firing often provides a few lower Hz for the buck, so sometimes are preferred for home theater, whereas some audiohpiles claim that front (or rear) firing subs are often tighter an dmore musical.
In my experience the component quality and room EQ are more important (and placement can make a huge difference), so use your ears and be careful where you put it. GL! |

Of course it could just be because I went with a much better sub the second time around with the front firing one.(Infinity IL120) It also had no problem with the lows. |
