It wasn't a great movie, but the 12 minute continuous shot at the beginning of Snake Eyes.

I agree on many of the movies already listed! A lot of great visual and auditory opening scenes to those movies.

For something completely different- something more situational and comedic: American Wedding - the first two scenes. The opening scene of Jim and Michelle at the restaurant where he intends to propose to her. She ends up under the table and all sorts of hilarity follows. Then the next scene at their engagement party- the scene of Stiffler the cake, the dogs and Jim behind closed doors. Makes me choke with laughter every time.

Actually that opens a completely different can of worms for me. That reminds me of the opening to Theres Something About Mary. I remember thinking:"I can't believe they went there.", when 10 seconds later, they show "the frank and beans" caught in the zipper. But thats not all folks. You haven't even caught your breath when the scene ends with Ben Stiller's character in a stretcher surrounded by police and firemen with Mary's brother screaming "HE WAS MASTURBATING!!!!!!!!!"

THAT was funny. And a great opening scene.
