This is too hard:

Dr. Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange and 2001 are just too awsome. It's like picking a favorite child.

Well, I'm new to the world of Kubrick. I picked up Full Metal Jacket as a blind buy for 15$ and was absolutely blown away by the sheer brilliance of the movie.

My experience in terms of watching movies is very limited. And even though I've lived two years more than two decades, I highly doubt I've watched more than a 100 films in my lifetime. Blu Ray is really the first technology I've embraced for movies and every film I watch I feel as if I'm being spoiled. I've been picking up a lot of recent releases for new movies, but stumbled on a few deals for older ones that looked interesting.

Full Metal Jacket was one of them, and for the first time in my life I've seen a movie that I would honestly consider being far and above the best I've ever seen. It's the only movie of Kubrick's I've seen, save parts of Spartacus on television. Spartacus was always broken up into two days/evenings and I would always miss one.

I'm just curious what would be the next best film of Kubricks that I should pick up? Full Metal Jacket has impressed me so much I'm not hesitant to blind buy. Plus it helps to know I'm an hour away from a rental store and the same to a theater, so I blind buy a lot. Almost every film in my collection is a blind buy.

I just feel lucky to have stumbled upon Full Metal Jacket when I did, otherwise I think it would have been a while before I found out about Stanley Kubrick.

I also voted in the poll, but my vote is obviously biased.

If you liked FMJ then I would recommend you buy 2001, A Clockwork Orange and The Shining on Blu-Ray as they are all brilliant Kubrick films.

Out of those on the list I'd pick The Shining.

However, I've always felt like the best thing Kubrick never got the chance to do was Artificial Intelligence, which Steven Spielberg did for him after his death. Every time I watch it I try to imagine what he would have done differently, and honestly that film could have been SOOOO good. I still loved it even with Spielberg doing it, and I think it's one of Spielberg's last great movies. However, yeah....Kubrick would've done it better.

That's a hard one, but I'll go with "The Shining".

Horror buff like me has to go Shining. Eyes Wide Shut was surprisingly good though.

Never liked 2001 much.

-FMJ was good, but as others said: its almost like two mini-movies, that are almost entirely disconnected, with the exception of the two soldiers reuniting in battle. for some reason, that didn't sit well with me. perhaps i need to watch it a 9th-10th time, as i've heard you really only "see" a kubrick movie on the 20-25th watching

I'm a huge Kubrick fan and I would recommend

1. Dr. Strangelove (releases on BD June 16, 2009)

but until that one comes out I'd start with

The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut. You may like 2001, but as much as I love Kubrick's work it's the one that I personally like the least and I'm just now learning to appreciate it.

Most if not all of Kubrick's film are great(well not so much Eye's Wide Shut),Sparticus will be awesome on Blu(Criterion please!) 3 of his early MGM shorter films(Paths Of Glory,The Killing and Killer's Kiss) could be released on a single BD 50,sure that wont happen,at least in that way! Still waiting for Fear and Desire to be released on home video, maybe it's a "lost film"?!

Directly from his page on imdb.com

His dislike of his early film Fear and Desire (1953) is well known. He went out of his way to buy all the prints of it so no one else could see it.
