I usually leave my phone upstairs during 24, but I'm pretty cranky when disrupted during the Jack Bauer Power Hour.
This thread has more or less become a movie theatre pet peeve thread. ![]() But uh... assigned seating could work for more than just opening weekend. For instance, going to a Toronto Blue Jays game more often then not there are open seats nearby and security doesn't care if you move to a better one if nobody is occupying them. Same could apply for movies, I suppose. I think it would be most USEFUL during opening weekend when things are busier. Imagine buying seats and getting stuck next to some annoying couple who you otherwise would avoid. It'd be cool if when ordering tickets you could see a seating chart of which seats are unavailable and plan accordingly. Some movies you don't have a choice cause it's busy but imagine buying tickets and being among the ten people in the theatre and having seats right behind the PDA couple. |

It would be difficult, and expensive, to enforce. Think of an arena when you go for a sporting event, how many ushers do you see? Now think of your multi-plex needing to have additional ushers (probably 4-6) to ensure that there are no conflicts with people insisting that someone else has taken their seat.
Don't get me wrong, this is a fantastic idea, and it sounds like there are several theaters that are implementing it in one way or the other, but to do in every/any theater during an anticipated big opening would be cost-prohibitive. I personally like the idea of a luxury theater, where you have recliner seats and over 21 policy. The food and drink would be a bonus, but this is something I would definitely pay a premium for! Additionally, I would think the presentation would have to be in hi-def, with top-notch sound (better than in a regular theater) in order to make the experience complete. Now that would be worth the price of admission! |

The ArcLight Theater here in Los Angeles already does this.
There is a seating chart so that you can choose the seats you want (or what is available) and when you walk into the theater there is an usher who takes your tickets and shows you to your seat. There are 21+ screenings where you can indeed get your drink on with no children. ![]() Of course ticket prices are higher but that seems to cuts out the people you try to avoid at the movies. |

It's just one theatre that is adjacent to the multiplex. It has it's own entrance, concierge desk, snack bar, seating area for a meal before or after the show, and a small 40 seat theatre. It's like a theatre with a small 10 table resteraunt attached to it.

I go to assigned seating theaters all the time. There are a bunch in L.A. It's great! You don't have to wait in line, or get to the theater an hour earlier. Pick your seats online, show up when the ticket says.
They cost more, but it is worth it for opening weekend or popular movies. |

Every theater in Japan is like that (as far as I know). It was awesome, you buy a ticket, they show you a map of the theater, you show them where you want to sit, they tell you specific seats in that area, you get 'em. No huge lines before the movie starts (or to buy tickets) and you don't have to worry about saving your seat, or somebody asking you to move down or whatnot.
Plus everyone there was quiet during movies, food was cheaper than the states, and they sold cool movie merchandise too. Except for the fact that they got most movies way later than the rest of the world, watching movies there was lightyears better than here in the US. |

A long time ago in a movie theater far, far away....
...I was in the Manhattan, NY theater watching the original STAR WARS. The theater was very crowded. The movie had just started and I had an aisle seat. I noticed an elderly lady working her way up the stairs towards me. Then - to my surprise - she sat in my lap! It was dark and she did not see me sitting there. WOW. That was the only time that ever happened to me. It figures it would be an elder lady. Can you imagine if Megan Fox sat in your lap in a dark theater? And before anyone asks.... nope, I did not let the old lady sit in my lap for the entire movie. She was so embarrassed that she left the theater. I stayed and watched the rest of STAR WARS. |

As far as I can remember there has never been assigned seats over here whether it is for a blockbuster, an avant-première or a low profile movie. Personally I would hate that, I like to choose my seat in the front center and I would be disgruntled if I was to seat, say at the back and on one side or something.

I lived in Germany and they do the assigned seating in their kinos. It was freakin' sweet because you could tell how crowded your screening was going to be and such and you could get the best seats in the house. I remember back in 2003 when we first got there; me and my dad attempted to go see Kill Bill Vol. 1 in the original English audio and they wouldn't let me in because of my age, 14, trying to get into an 18 rated film. That was shocking because like in America you can get into an R rated film and it doesn't really matter how old you are.
Cineworld at Mainfrankenpark was the shizznite! I loved that theater. It was the best theater I had ever been too. |

I remember back when stadium seating was brand new, at the theater near my home they had the option to get reserved seating. I remember getting it then it disappeared after a while. It was during the time of when those the original trilogy was being re-released in the theater with the additional footage.
