Blockbuster has repeatedly raised their prices on rentals over the past few years especially. I was just there the other day, and it was $8 to rent a PS3/360/Wii game!

It shouldn't be any suprise that they appear to be going under. Prices have gotten ridiculous, and other options have appeared. Why pay $6 to rent a movie when i can get one for $1/night in the redbox? Doesn't make much sense, does it?

as far as I am concerned Blockbuster gets what they deserve. When they first came to our town they put about 4 really good video stores out of business. I never go there. The grocery store I work at has a redbox and it is way busy, people are always getting something. Personally I don't rent movies often. If I decide I want to, I got to the library and rent them for free

It's $9 for games at my blockbuster. My girlfriend and I were standing in line when this woman walked in with her kid and asked how much it was to rent a game. When they answered $9, the lady's jaw literally dropped and she went "to RENT???" Everyone looked at her, it was hilarious. She walked out with her kid. My girlfriend and I still say that to this day in random situations: to RENT???

I think that's what this policy change regarding in store exchanges is: using no late fees to drive online customers into b&m stores, even though a large percentage of those folks arguably are the least interested in b&m rental or they wouldn't have signed up for online in the first place.
agreed, when i worked at blockbuster, the only people that really came in stating i am here cause of no late fee's were from other BM stores, the only people coming over from netflix were there cause of blockbuster online, which started off ok, then got better with in store exchanges and checkins, and then went downhill when they realized they couldn't profit with the cost.

I think the one key to online anything, at least in my case, is no customer loyalty, i cling to BM stores that i like, have enjoyable experiences, like the clerks, etc.... when it comes to online i flip flop to whoever has the lowest price and best offerings, if they want to pull people away from netflix they have to beat them cost/benefit ratio wise, which is hard for them really to do when they are incurring the costs of BM retail at the same time.

Well It's not just Blockbuster that charges $8 for game rentals my Hollywood Video does to and it costs a little bit more for new releases also.
My BB charges $5.30 with tax for a blu ray. HV $5.61 with tax not much of a difference just 31 cents in change.

Red Box is cool and all but if you keep that movie for 5 days its still $5+tax and it would be dumb to rent one for a day and return the next with gas prices and all.

People might not be aware that when it comes to renting movies there isn't really any profit making. It cost more for a BB or HV to buy just one copy of say Dark Night lets say it costs them $50 each for a copy of Dark Night any they have 100 copies in the store at $5 a rental it would take one copy 10 rentals just to break even then after that it's profit but you figure a lot of times they don't break even cause within the first month the movie is out is when people are going to rent after that its not new anymore. So after about 2 months of sitting on the new release shelf it gets moved to the general section at lower price which is like $2 less.

Another comment re the change in how in-store exchanges are handled: it seems to me that they could have made the change elective. Make it an account setting, whereby a customer can state whether he wants in-store exchanges to have a customary late fee -or- no late fee but the in-store discs count against the queue.

(Having said that, I repeatedly experienced no late fee even if I returned the disc within a week after the due date. After a week past due, then the cost of the disc would be charged, which is then credited minus the $1.25 "re-stocking fee" upon returning the disc.)

The company, which today reported a fiscal fourth-quarter loss on a $435 million impairment charge, also said it would expand both its program of weekly and monthly in-store rental rates and the number of devices that will be able to play its digitally-delivered titles, while lobbying for better revenue-sharing participation from movie studios and videogames publishers.
If they hike my rate or remove some of my services one more time, I'm going Netflix.

This is beyond ridiculous.

I wonder why more people don't already have Netflix now? I'm not a Netflix stockholder or anything, but I've had the service for four months, and I absolutely love it. You only pay a dollar more per month for Blu Ray, and I get three at a time. I only have time to watch movies on the weekend, but I watch all three every weekend. So I pay around 20 dollars a month to watch 12-15 Blu Rays per month. I get a two-day turnaround because I live in a big city, so that's nice. But I would never EVER go back to paying 15 bucks to rent 3 movies a weekend, when that same amount roughly lasts me for an entire month, with a way better selection of Blu Ray movies (Princess Bride came in yesterday, no wait at all). Why do people still go to B&M stores? Habit?

There was a cheap ass version of Redbox called Ohana Flix which came out in Hawaii about two years ago. They were originally charging $2 to rent a movie but eventually dropped the price down to a $1. Back in 2007 when they first started and right when I got my first credit card I decided to try them out and see how they are; HORRIBLE! Every DVD I rented was scratched deep to $#!t and I realized this because in the middle where the hole is at, this little chip was placed and severely throws off the balance of the disc and scratches it all up. I had rented about 5 times before I gave up. They had also given me two free rental which I was charged $46 because there was a systems error and it did not register that I returned them. They were all "really sorry" that it had happened and to this day when I see those machines, it is a sad realization that robots are going to replace employees who have brains.

I don't rent much these days since I prefer to just buy the movie nowadays but when I do decide to rent, Netflix doesn't really fit the way I think. I don't normally plan ahead when it comes to renting. The majority of the time, it's a spur of the moment thing. I also enjoy the in-store browsing aspect when renting locally (part of the reason I prefer to buy locally rather than buy online as well). If anything is replacing my renting at Blockbuster though, it's probably the video on demand stuff. Perfect in terms of instant access but at the moment still lacking with the selection and I really, really hate browsing the VOD menus. Anyway, I like Blockbuster so I hope the recovery goes well.

They just put one in two blocks from my house. It is outside, so it is open 24hrs a day. No Blu-ray though. I use netflix and love it. I don't see myself using Redbox too much since they don't carry older or more obscure movies like Netflix. I do have to say though that lately most everything in my queue is long wait to very long wait and nearly none of them are Blu-rays. Even stuff that has been out for several years is showing this.

Blockbusters in S.A. only charge 4.99 for blu-ray and Hollywood video has a special of $4 for blu-ray. I guess I can say "I have it made"

I think RedBox is great. I have one near me with Blu-Rays. The selection is extremely limited, but if I'm just going to rent one movie and make it a recent release, I can usually find something there. VERY different from the regular renting or NetFlix experience, but then again, it has its niche.

Blockbuster needs to shape up... period. Has anyone else noticed the declination of its mail-in movie service? It's become less movies at a time, for a higher cost and less in-store returns. AND as of last week or so they changed their mail to store exchange policy that doesnt allow any of your mail movies to be shipped to you until the in-store movie is returned. What have we learned from CC blockbuster? eggs-actly.

B&M rental stores is an outdated model for obvious reasons. BB should either just sell all their B&M locations over time once the commercial real estate market turns around or convert them to restaurants with movie vending machines inside. Maybe make them little dinner and a movie diners.
