‘Watchmen’ Screenwriter Posts Open Letter Urging Fans To See The Film Again
Published by Casey Seijas on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 10:41 am.

'Watchmen'Despite the fact that “Watchmen” opened up to big box-office numbers with no A-list actors, a running-time just shy of three hours and a kid un-friendly R-rating, it seems that many critics and analysts are labeling Zack Snyder’s adaptation a certified box office flop after the film failed to crack the $60M mark during its debut weekend. And while most cast and crew would simply let the haters hate, “Watchmen” screenwriter David Hayter has decided to fight back.

In an open letter posted on HardcoreNerdity, Hayter recounts the years of blood, sweat and tears he and his fellow crew members put into the film, and humbly offers a plea to fans to see the movie again this weekend.

“You have to understand, everyone is watching to see how the film will do in its second week,” said Hayter. “If you’re thinking of seeing it again anyway, please go back this weekend, Friday or Saturday night.”

“Demonstrate the power of the fans,” continued Hayter, “because it’ll help let the people who pay for these movies know what we’d like to see. Because if it drops off the radar after the first weekend, they will never allow a film like this to be made again.”

Hayter insists that his modest proposal has nothing to do with financial gain on his part (”I do not profit one cent from an increase in box office, although an increase in box office can add to the value of the writers’ eventual residual profits from DVD and TV sales.”), but rather a strong belief that, much like the book, “Watchmen” is something special and unique, and shouldn’t easily be forgotten.

“I firmly believe that ‘Watchmen’, the novel, must be read through more than once to even have the faintest grip on it,” Hayter related. “And I believe the film is the same.

“This is a movie made by fans, for fans. Hundreds of people put in years of their lives to make this movie happen, and every one of them was insanely committed to retaining the integrity of this amazing, epic tale. This is a rare success story, bordering on the impossible, and every studio in town is watching to see if it will work. Hell, most of them own a piece of the movie.”
Post your thoughts.
