It sure is! Black Rain, and Face/Off sounded fantastic to be lossy soundtracks. There are more great sounding lossy soundtracks on blu-ray as well.

There's no substitute for lossless audio.

"When I buy a Blu-ray, I expect to get HD picture and HD audio."

you mean you want LOSSLESS audio. HD audio is listed as any bitrate over 1.5 mbps DTS or any DD track about 448 kbps. Shooter is 640 kbps.... thus it IS HD audio, just not lossless.

Since you fail to get the point, let me try this...

When I buy a Blu-ray disc. I expect to get HD picture and the best audio available, which is lossless.

If I'm buying a loaf of bread, I expect to get a full loaf of bread.
Not half a loaf.

Maybe your perfectly content with settling for lossy DD tracks on your blu-rays, but I'm not.

I want the whole enchilada.

you like what you want, I agree, I would have liked more breathing room on the track, but to say it isn't HD audio is a technical fallacy. I was just correcting that. I didn't like 338kbps DD on dvd's, but it was still considered DVD audio.

You're going to miss out on a lot of good blu-ray movies with lossy audio. You've listened to Dolby Digital 5.1 before, and was satisfied with it! And besides, the bitrate of Dolby Digital 5.1 on blu-ray, is equivalent to Dolby Digital Plus on HD-DVD, which is still high definition audio.

Except for Universal HD DVDs. They were encoded @ 1.5 Mbps.

This is why it makes sense to keep titles like U-571, The Thing, and Apollo 13. The HD DVD versions have no DNR and have DD+ @ 1.5 Mbps. 80% of people can't hear the difference in DD+ @ 1.5 Mbps and a lossless track.

Interesting! I'm going to compare a couple of Universal titles between HD-DVD and blu-ray, and see if I can hear a difference.

Ordered this from amazon yesterday. Finally upgrading from the DVD. I was comparing prices and saw difference specs on walmart.com. According to them, the disc has DTS HD. I'm assuming that's wrong, but that'd be awesome if true. Anyone have any information on a new edition with lossless audio?

Confirmed. Received the disc today and it's the same thing except there's a new WB barcode sticker on the back.

I just watched this for the first time on Blu - the UK Blu (which I believe is the same as the US version). I've always liked this movie more than it seems to be generally appreciated and the Blu simply blew away the DVD I used to have : great PQ and much more powerful AQ. Strange that they would go with DD 5.1 when the closing credits list DD, DTS and Sony DDS (with DTS being the only one that doesn't say "In Selected Theaters"). Powerful stuff which could only be better with AVC & DTS-HD MA.

Paramount has gotten so lazy in the last couple years. First, they started drip feeding their catalog titles. Then they started licensing many of their sought after catalog titles to Olive who likes to jack up the price about 20-30% more than Paramount. On top of all that they've licensed out many of their previously released catalog titles to Warner, which is pointless since they are the same discs like Shooter.

Wow, dead thread. I just rewatched this after reading the book. I really like this movie, but the sound sucks. I don't remember ever having to turn up my amp this far. I know it's not lossless sound, but still ... I've got a UK disc. Does anyone know if the the US WB disc is any better sounding/louder? It's Paramount (now WB), so ... probably the same disc, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

After blind-buying this 13 months ago when Amazon had it for $1, I finally got around to watching it. It was a lot better than I thought it would be.

You got it for a dollar! Damn! BRDC says $4.99 is the low price. Good move for you!
