Arrow Matt Damon could've been Kirk

I find it rather stupid that Abrams considers his cast to be unknowns, and considering Chris Pine of Smokin' Aces and that Lindsey Lohan movie that American Airlines made me watch on my flight from St. Louis when they forced me to watch isn't an unknown. But how can he call John Cho, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, Eric Bana, Winona Ryder, Karl Urban, Diora Baird, Bruce Greenwood or Clifton Collins Jr. unknowns? They have made more movies than he has, lol. Can they really be an unknown if they've starred in movies or TV shows that millions have seen? They might not be relative huge stars but the point is every single person in this movie I've seen in lots of other things. Even the average Joe who doesn't know there name will immediately be able to tell you "Spock is Syler" maybe this will make people remember their names easier but I just think it's unfair to call all these actors unknowns. Anyways that's just my $.02 well here's the story:

Remember those rumours suggesting Matt Damon has been approached to play Captain Kirk in J.J Abrams' "Star Trek" reboot?

They were as true as my love for Cotton Candy!

Director Abrams tells Life that the Good Will Hunter was indeed approached about playing the Enterprise Captain.

''I actually approached Matt and we had some discussions, but everything happens for a reason'', Abrams tells the site. "On the one hand, it would have been great to work with Matt -- but at the end of the day, it was such a better move to cast the movie with unknowns. Not because it is fun to discover the stars of tomorrow, but even more so, just like with the first STAR WARS, you didn't know who those people were when you saw the movie. You believed that guy was Luke Skywalker. You didn't recognize him from six other movies. You bought into who this guy was. It is a slippery slope when you cast any actor that is somewhat known. What is the cut off point? If you cast half famous faces and half unknown, it can throw an audience -- but this way, we weren't beholden to any fame meter.''

I have to agree. It's like when it was suggested Tom Cruise was going to play Captain Pike in the film. Though only a small part, it works much better with Bruce Greenwood (who, though recognizable, isn't half the 'movie-star' Cruise is) in that role.

What's your source here? I've never heard of Damon being a jerk, he's always seemed like a pretty down to earth guy on interviews, and granted the cameras where running but he was very nice to the up and comers when they did the project Greenlight seasons.

never heard this or seen this and "experience with him like crap" doesn't sound like a direct quote as it makes no sense.

you're entitled to your opinion, but some of my coworkers have worked with him and said he's a great person to work with, very engaging with everyone and incredibly dedicated to his profession. again, if you dislike him whatev, but it's kind of ridiculous to just make remarks that are based on nothing

in regards to the news, read about this and definitely agree with going with more unknown actors (who won't be so unknown anymore ). imo in this type of situation it will definitely help strengthen an audience's investment in the story.

Then maybe he would have been a wonderful Captain Kirk, everyone is always saying the same about William Shatner

Bruce Greenwood is one of those guys I just like to see show up as a supporting actor in a movie, perfect choice for Pike, a great President in National Treasure... he's just a great choice for those secondary authoritative figures.

Definitely glad they went with Pike instead of Damon, bleh, if you're going to reboot something sometimes it's good to do it without baggage. They don't have to have a blank resume, but Damon's resume is way past blank plus he doesn't fit the personality.

Exactly, comparing his cast to Mark Hamil who really was an unknown is an extreme stretch. I remember Chris Pine very well from Smokin' Aces and Zachary Quinto will always come to my mind as Syler first so for him to think we are just immediately going to see his cast as the crew of the Enterprise is a bit of a joke.
