More interestingly, since the source material was about an 11 year old catholic schoolgirl assassin, why should the filmmakers be criticized so harshly if they maintained the vision of the original work? Wouldn't the "conservative opinion" have to be directed at the graphic novel and not the film itself?

All I can say about the only thing I've seen of the film so far (that being the photo included in the OP) is that I like the idea of the Jodie Foster (Taxi Driver) + Natalie Portman (Leon) + Uma Thurman (Kill Bill) statement. I loved all of those films for different reasons. Combine the proper motivations with a young up-and-coming actress that can prove herself worthy and this could become an instant classic.

Oh really? You think the words "Instant Classic" work with the following words "Nicolas Cage"

LMAO!!! As long as he only appears in short flashback sequences or only in the very beginning of the film, it could work. Just because I haven't enjoyed Nicolas Cage at all in the last 10 years, it doesn't mean that he isn't able to miraculously pull off a performance worthy of his "glory days."

Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson and Lyndsy Fonseca are set to star in Kick-Ass, Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of the violent Mark Millar comic book, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Written by Millar and drawn by John Romita Jr., the Marvel Comics' Icon imprint book centers on a high school dweeb named Dave Lizewski who decides to become a superhero even though he has no athletic ability or coordination. Things change when he eventually runs into real bad guys with real weapons.

Johnson plays title character, while Fonseca plays the object of the teen's infatuation who believes Dave is gay. Cage is a former cop who wants to bring down a druglord and has trained his daughter (Chloe Moretz) to be a lethal weapon.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse is also in the cast.

18-year-old British actor Aaron Johnson has been cast as the title character, Dave Lizewski, a 15-year-old boy named Dave Lizewski who attempts to become a real-life superhero. The catch is that he has no powers or any of the stereotypical reasons for choosing to fight crime.

21-year-old Lyndsy Fonseca will play high school hottie and Dave’s crush Katie Deauxma, who thinks he is gay.

Nicolas Cage has been cast as a former cop named Big Daddy who is also trying to bring down a druglord and has trained his daughter to be “a lethal weapon” .

Chloe Moretz is Hit Girl, the ferocious, potty-mouthed 11-year-old daughter of Big Daddy (Cage). She is described as a “four foot killing machine” with “a ninja sword”.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse (McLovin from Superbad) is in talks to play the Red Mist, an angry teenage son of a mobster who is out to uncover Kick-Ass’ true identity.

We've been waiting and waiting to finally get a real photo of Dave Lizewski in his homemade costume - and here it is! For those who thinks this looks a bit cheesy, that is exactly the point. Dave is just a kid who wonders why more people don't dress up in crazy costumes and become heroes on their own - so he does it himself. The first photo looks like it's from the scene where he first goes out and gets his ass kicked encountering some thugs on the street. The reason why he ends up getting famous is because people record the fight and put it on YouTube. Take a look!

I've got to admit, these look much better than I was expecting. It looks like Vaughn is really going to pull it off - and as a huge fan of the comic book series, I can't even begin to tell you how exciting that is.

Kick-Ass is both written and directed by British filmmaker Matthew Vaughn, of Layer Cake and Stardust previously. The screenplay was co-written by Vaughn and his writing partner Jane Goldman, of Stardust as well. The story is an adaptation of Mark Millar's comic of the same name that is currently in the middle of its first series. Kick-Ass was funded entirely by Matthew Vaughn on his own and doesn't yet have a distributor. However, we can expect Kick-Ass to eventually show up in theaters sometime in 2009.

I just picked up these books. Looking forward to reading them

Serious with a healthy dose of dark humor. Really love it. As for all the pedo talk. I'm sure it doesn't matter whether it's a schoolgirls outfit, or a trashbag that's being worn, I'm assuming A pedophile is going to be a creepy pedo regardless, wether he or she is watching some feature film or the Disney Channel know what I mean?

The comic book in no way sexualizes Hit Girl at ALL. Shes just a normal looking 11 yr old kid who could kill you with one hand tied behind her back in the blink of an eye and I'm sure that the movie will be exactly the same way.

I'm not offended by anything the comic portrays because I am an adult who knows the difference between reality and comic book violence. My only wonder is how others will take it. Proof positive by comments on the very topic of this movie that no one has seen yet. just my two cents

That's a joke right? I mean he was funny in SuperBad but the son of a mobster? Angry teen? That's just horrible casting right there...........

I've seen SuperBad and I've seen his "angry teen" in RoleModels and while he's a funny kid, I cannot take a 130lb anybody serious as an angry teen seeking revenge. Featherweights don't have enough power for anything like knockouts, so unless he gets in a slap fight with unclipped finger nails or just pulls a gun, there is nothing scary about McLovin, lol.

My guess is because exposure to this is greatly increased by the release of a film (and it's trailers and other marketing materials, including this picture). Personally, I'm not a fan of comic books or graphic novels. However, I do enjoy going to the theatres to see the creativity on-screen. So, I'm someone who wouldn't criticize the source material initially, because I'm a member of the "dumber masses" of folks out there who watch these movies only, as opposed to reading graphical novels...

What's with all the Nic Cage hatred?

The Rock
Adaptation
Leaving Las Vegas
Lord of War
Face Off

He has plenty of good films. If you were making millions of dollars a film wouldn't you do a couple of side jobs for money?

Using Asian or Oriental is fine as they are generic terms that can refer to any of the Asian coutnries. Calling someone chinese is inaapropriate as then it assumes all asians are from China. Unless of course you know for sure they are Chinese.

I'd add Matchstick Men to that.

It's not like Next could have been saved by someone else doing it. As long as the movie itself is good I'm happy to see him.

No thank you to The Rock and Face Off, both of which just remind me of Cage's ability to flip flop between his quiet and loud voice inexplicably from scene to scene.

Though Matchstick Men was great and Lord of War was great as a drama, it was marketed as a dark comedy (which set me up for an expectation the film would never meet).

The bulk of his work following Leaving Las Vegas has been awful. Next for all of the places it departed from the Philip K Dick story was only further hindered by Cage and another one of his weird hairpieces. His remakes of Wicker Man and Bangkok Dangerous were completely unnecessary. Snake Eyes was an embarrassment and I find the National Treasure movies unwatchable (not to mention inseparable from Knowing, his newest "solve the clues" movie).
