Ah. Well, then there is also LG and Samsung with their combos.

That might be more significant than yet another A2-type derivative. I think people are looking for models that don't have the playback reliability problems of the Toshiba design.

I would think most of the firmware would be the same.

Well it looks like Onkyo will be releasing a HD-DVD player this fall. So now there will be at least two brands of HD-DVD players to choose from. HD-DVD camp needs more brands of players to survive. When intelligent people see only Toshiba format HD-DVD players and 5+ brands of BLU-RAY players they start to think that BLU-RAY might have more support.
Sounds like Onkyo is planning a combo HD-DVD and BLU-RAY player also. They already have a history of making combo Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio players

RCA currently has no HD-DVD players in production. I wonder if they plan on releasing a new HD-DVD player or they will make a combo player instead.

This Christmas season there might be 6+ brands of BLU-RAY players to choose from and maybe 3+ brands of HD-DVD players to choose from if RCA comes out with a new player.

There are supposedly four Chinese makers planning to bring out models based on a Microsoft/Broadcom reference design. But, we haven't heard much since CES.

Microsoft and Broadcom Deliver Combined Hardware and Software Platform for More Cost-Efficient HD DVD Players

Quote:
The first players incorporating the new platform are expected from manufacturers in the second quarter of this year.
A little more than two weeks to go in Q2, and yet there is not a new platform player in sight.

In fact, I was expecting the Onkyo player to based on that, especially considering the BCM7440 is supposed to be a SoC Solution for Blu-ray™, HD DVD™ and Universal HD DVD Players

Why wouldn't a distinguished company like Onkyo, that states it wants to bring out a Universal solution, not want to start with a SoC that is designed for it, rather than rehash a HD DVD-only design that has been shown to have problems?
