Ah, yes! I remember when I bought the Aliens 6 Disc CAV Special Edition box set for $50, and that was 1/2 price! I have to admit, it was worth it. Even though I had to turn the discs over every half hour, I was so in awe of the laserdisc capabilities over VHS. I also bought T2: The Director's Cut for $50. Lol, can you imagine people's reactions if the studios tried selling us one version of one movie with a few extra features in basic packaging nowadays for $100?

i have about 70 laserdiscs, and a working player hooked up, but havent watched any of them in ages. i also remember paying 35-40, up to 100-200 for some special cav box sets. when dvd first came out, in the rush to make titles available on dvd, some of the transfers were crap, and even though dvd was capable of producing better images than LD, many of those early titles still looked way better on LD.

my Ld plays CD's as well but it flips over automatic so i just have to change the disc. a couple months ago i talked the man who got me into LD told me they STILL make LD movies only VERY LIMITED MOVIES. *HOLD ON*, not in this country but u guess it JAPAN. he has all 3 LOTR's on LD in DTS. only theater version he said sound is insane. the movies are incanely expensive but he said will worth the money. it's in english but has some japan writing on covers. he didn't remember the web site had to get it from home supposed to have gotten back to me but as u c its been a couple months now.
i did a search and i found LD TDK but for $250 OUCH!!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

where are you in Wisconsin? I will be out there this summer (July 4th weekend) and could have a few titles to drop off if you want them. |

I still have a working, like-new condition Pioneer LCD-D604 with a few boxes of LDs down in the basement.....guessing I have 180-200 titles. Can't bring myself to sell them because I know they won't sell for much and they are heavy to ship. Also can't bring myself to throw them away.

Yes. It finally came to DVD. You know, I was a tad disappointed. I had the Laserdisc and felt the DVD didn't impress as much as it ought to have regarding both PQ and AQ. That movie *begs* to be on Blu-ray.

When DVDs came out, I kept thinking that they just don't sound as good as Laserdiscs. My player is a Pioneer CLD-980. Still works. I transferred several of my exclusive LD titles to DVD on my Sony DVD recorder. But each month goes by and another former LD exclusive comes to DVD or Blu-ray. Not many left that I didn't already list in my post above. |

I still own over 30 LDs, but almost all of them are concert LDs by Japanese rock bands. Some of them made it to dvd, but since most of them were production in the 80's; the PQ isn't all that impressive even on dvd. One of the few non-concert LDs I got is the first press Japanese version of Akira. I am not sure if it is worth something or not.

Here is a fantastic website for Laser Disc collectors. The Laser Disc Database.
http://www.lddb.com/ Not only does it have a list of EVERY Laser Discs ever made, in the U.S., and overseas like Japan, but you can also create your Laser Disc Collection with your own profile, much like www.dvdaficionado. |

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have a "mid-range" Pioneer LD player (forget which model), that I bought on EBay about 7-9 years ago for about $90.00. It's hooked up to my 111FD (via S-Video) and still works. If it hasn't been played for a while, you sometimes have to input/eject the disc once or twice to get the player to read it. Then it works perfectly well. The same goes for the auto-flip feature. If you give it a nudge the first or second time, it typically works.
LDs worthy of mention...the very reason I bought the player - ANIMATION: The Art of Tom and Jerry (Vols. I, II, & III - all in separate boxsets) - This is a rarity and tough to find today. Beautiful inserts with each boxset and COMPLETE and UNCUT (unlike the DVD collections). The Golden Age of Looney Tunes (Volumes 1-5 - ALL in separate boxsets) - Some of these are hard to find (Vol 5 cost me $375.00 - 6 years ago). These contain a few cartoons that were never released on DVD...such as "Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips". As you can guess from the title, more WWII racist propaganda from our friends at WB. ![]() Betty Boop - (2) COMPLETE boxset collections and (2) single compilation discs. It's a shame...the boxsets are complete, but make VERY bad use of DNR, so that it's a mixed blessing. The single discs have no DNR. MGM "Happy Harmonies" Vol.I - Same scenario with cover art and inserts as above. For me, this was worth getting the LD player alone. There is LITTLE chance that these cartoon GEMS will be released on DVD. This is the work of former WB animators Rudolph Ising and Hugh Harmon. Wonderfully "Disney-esque" in use of color and presentation. Two of the cartoons "The Milky Way" and "Peace on Earth" won Oscars. The Compleat Tex Avery Laserdisc - Same scenario with cover art and inserts. This was never released on DVD (as promised - except in France) and is complete and uncut. All of his work with MGM. |

Hey All,
I found a nice pioneer laserdisc player on ebay, so you can still find them. I have a question for you guys. I have a fairly large number of discs, all are letterbox. None of them have the actual aspect ratio, they just say letterbox. When I play them they look squat and the black bars are thicker than a letterbox blu ray with a 2.44 aspect ratio. Are you guys seeing this too? Is it an adjustment? KCcarl |
