Apparently only one of the stories they are working on is being lifted from the graphic novel (not really sure why...).

Mickey Rourke talks Sin City 2

Quote:
Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller are planning to include the story Just Another Saturday Night in the long-awaited sequel to Sin City.

Involving three of the key players from the first film in the form of Hartigan (Bruce Willis), Nancy (Jessica Alba) and Marv (Mickey Rourke), it would be a popular choice, provided the original talent could be persuaded to return.

Just Another Saturday Night follows Marv's movements on the same night that Nancy and Hartigan are reunited, providing a storyline that runs in tandem with the events of the first movie's final third.

Sounds good, I'd be happier if Clive Owen returned though.

Robert Rodriguez Says SIN CITY 2 and MACHETE KILLS Will Film This Year

Given that the festival takes place in his home city, it’s no surprise that filmmaker Robert Rodriguez took part in the 2012 SXSW Film Festival. Rodriguez took the opportunity to provide another update on his production company Quickdraw Productions and the many projects he currently has in development. In addition to touting the launch of Quickdraw Animation (two animated feature films, Heavy Metal and a family film, are already in development), Rodriguez gave a status report on the long-promised Sin City 2 and the Machete follow-up Machete Kills, saying both projects are poised to go into production this year. Hit the jump for more.

Rodriguez gave a big “Quickdraw Productions” update at last year’s Comic-Con, promising sequels for Sin City and Machete and announcing that he’s working on bringing Heavy Metal to the screen (for which he now says has a finished script and is moving into the storyboard phase). He announced that he has two sequels for Machete planned: Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again. At SXSW (per THR), Rodriguez said that Machete Kills is on track to start shooting this April. The plot apparently has Machete tasked with taking down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. So, you know, Danny Trejo slicing and dicing space-obsessed uber villains should make for a good time.

Sin City 2 is a project that’s been “in development” for quite a while. We first heard about the prospect of a follow-up soon after the first film hit theaters in 2005. Numerous casting rumors have floated around over the years (Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie), but Rodriguez says the film is finally poised to shoot this summer. We know the plot involves three separate stories from Frank Miller: A Dame to Kill For and two new ones that have yet to be announced. Oscar-winning The Departed screenwriter William Monahan did a pass on the script, and with years and years of development hopefully the wait will be well worth it. No cast has been announced as of yet, but Rodriguez confirmed that the cast of both Machete Kills and Sin City 2 “will be of the same caliber and eclecticism as the first films.”

While Machete Kills has Danny Trejo attached and other aspects that lead me to believe filming will actually start in April, I’m less optimistic about Sin City 2. We’ve been promised movement on the follow-up for years now with little-to-nothing by way of actual development. It is promising to hear that a script has come to fruition, so I don’t think a 2012 start date is out of the question, but I’m not holding my breath.

Interesting. I have only been wondering about old cast mates returning, but if they plan on bringing new people in that were as interesting as the previous cast, I am not worried at all. I sure hope Clive Owen comes back though. It has been a while since he has been in a movie I have even the slightest interest in.

For Sin City 2, what script? The first one was supposively exactly the same as the comic. Crack open the book and you have the script, right?

Not the case at all. The GRAPHIC NOVEL collection has a bunch of stories in it. The first film interspliced 3 (I think just 3) of the stories from the 7 or 8 novel series. Each book in the graphic novel collection tells each character's story from start to finish without any interruption from other stories.

You did read the part of the article that says two of the stories in the movie are brand new and not part of the comics, right? So yes, there's a script for it.

No, I didn't read that

I remember when Sin City first came out they said since there were 9 stories it would be 3 films with 3 stories each. Guess that has changed.

I think that might be part of the reason it's taken so long, to be completely honest. I can't wait to see how it turns out. It's about time we finally get the sequel. Machete Kills will shoot first, and Sin City during the summer after.

I'm probably in the minority here but I hate Owen. I can't enjoy any of his films.

while i do agree that id rather see stories from the books, it will be nice to not know every line of dialogue before its spoken on screen. one original story might be cool but i dont see the need to do any more than that.

I don't know how they can not use stories in the graphic novels unless Frank Miller is writing and storyboarding new Sin City material just for the film. The first movie is the book - just in motion. They even took great effort to make the shots look just like the panels from the comic.

However, if Miller is writing new material for the film, that might end up being a good thing. When I saw the first one, I'd already read the books, so the story had no surprises. It would be fun to not know how everything is going to play out.

I agree, Zen. If its Frank's idea, I'd be okay with making an exception.

We've known for 7 years that Miller was writing material exclusively for the sequel. I remember specifically that there was a story focused on Nancy's character, as he fell in love with Alba's performance in the first film (not sure what he's smoking).
